I am looking for information about my father's family.  His grandfather came to the USA from County Cork Ireland in the early 1900's, approximately 1905.  His name was John C Hanley and his father's name was Timothy (Tady) Hanley.  He was born approximately 1886-1888.  I would love to find his baptismal record to determine his birthdate and also to verify his mother's name.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. Killaconeanagh belongs to the Catholic parish of Castletownbere .To see what is available there follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20South-West&parish=Castletownbere&churchid=30

As you can see from the above link these records are also available online at:

    http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Also, given the year of birth, there will be a civil record of John?s birth as civil registration became mandatory in 1864. These are available from the GRO, here is their website:

  • Brooke:

There are two Timothy Hanley families in this parish in the 1901 census. Only one has a son named John. The mother had died recently. I found a civil birth index record for a John Hanly in the Castletown registration district. This may be your John. You would have to write to the GRO www.groireland.ie to get a copy of this record. Fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of birth, registration district and the volume and page number (5 and 46). Costs around 4 euros. I looked for a death index record for the wife of Timothy but did not locate a record that I was certain was his wife. You may want to look at www.familysearch.org to see if you can locate his wife. There is a mary Anne Hanly who died in 1898 in the Castletown registration district. Let me know if you have further questions.
