Searching for Thomas Murphy

Hi Barb,

Sorry but have done a thorough search for Thomas in all the years from 1740 to 1800  without a trace of Thomas. The only Murphy that turned up was a Mary, Richard & Elizaberth Murphy with the earliest of these being in 1783 and even this was a surprise to me in two ways. Firstly, all three of these appeared to be possibly from the same family in Mallow , Secondly, they were all Church of Ireland which is very rare for Murphy's. It is quite unusual for to find Baptismal records going back so far and it caused me to wonder where you got the date of 1740 from as the vasy majority of records only go back to the early 1800s. Is his date of birth from family records, an estimated date from Marriage records in the UK, a grave stone or where did you get it.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful at this time but perhaps if you could let me know the above I could try again but I do not hold out much hope of finding anything significant so far back regardles of religion.

I have a Mary Ann Murphy in my tree who's father was called Patrick Murphy, a fisherman from Cork who died before 1856 when Mary Ann married in England. This is the only information that I have from her marriage certificate. Ive never been able to find anything or anyone who knows this family in Ireland around 1800. I have messages posted on this site if you would like to read them. Thomas is a familiar name in my tree and as we all know the names were passed down from both sides of the families so it is possible there is a connection somewhere but it is so difficult to prove.

It is very possible  i have a conection in Gedmatch  but have no Murphys that i know of ,,,, however ,,,, i believe the closer the distance people are to each other the more likely they are to become friendly and married , for a problem like this the first thing i do is to go to Goole maps , since they are both from cork it is in step one of finding out how far they are from each other ... obviously  if one lived in cork and the other in Donegal the chances are les ... so google map told me a few things  1) first they are in walking distance to the Black water river as your Murphy lived in Killathy in Cork and my Connelly lived in kilworth  which is east and north of Killathy .... Google maps estamates walking  is 8.7 kilometers  a 2 -21/2 hours to walk ....it is probable they met in Fermoy( also on the Blackwater  and Highway M6 as it is/was a bigger city ... perhaps ther were boats that would accept travelers ..... so good luck  I think it is a Hit ,,,,, i have to  check my murphy who I did have contact with,,,, the key to success here for me was knowing the town land killathy

I am actually a descendant of Samuel Murphy and his brother Patrick Murphy who both served in the Revolutionary War out of Pennsylvania, USA.  I have been in search for  Samuel and Patrick's parents for several years, and the only lead I have on the parents are the records others have listed in Ancestry as Thomas Murphy and a Mary Larence who were married 25 Apr 1763 in Middlesex, England. Thomas and Mary also had a son named Samuel Murphy and one named Patrick Murphy who were both born in Middlesex, England. (Samuel in 1762; Patrick in 1765).  Let me just state that I am NOT certain Thomas and Mary are MY Samuel and Patrick's parents  --  still in search for proof.

I am so appreciative of your responses and assistance,  Bless you all!  My DNA results all come from West Cork, West Beara Peninsula, Southwest Munster in the Murphy line!

Just to complicate things a bit... there ae a number of Murphys who emigrated to Newfoundland.  My Murphys of NL, I am told, came from Cork, possibly Ballycotton... yet I have been unable to prove
