I believe that my gr gr grandfather, Cain Mahony was baptised on July 8 1814 in Kilmurry Parish. His father was DS Mahony and his mother was Cath Kearny. I was in Kilmurry just about a year ago, April, 2012 but could not find anything about him. I walked all through the beautiful cemetery there and there were a lot of Mahonys but not my Cain, as far as I could tell. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Joan,
Thank you for your message. I hope that someone from the area or someone who knows of the family makes a connection with you.
Did you know that Catholic records for the parish begin as early as 1786:
These records are available online at Irish Genealogy?s Website:
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
Also, civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so if Cain died in Ireland after this or had any children etc. you should be able to find some record of it in civil records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:

Have you tried looking in in the 1901/1911 census records to see if you can find any Mahony?s in the area that may be related to him? you can search these here:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
