Hi everyone 👋

My name is Kerry and I live in Australia. I am trying to connect with family that descend from my 3rd GreatGrandmother, Mary Lenehan. She certainly is a mystery.

Mary was a convict, transported to Australia with two young children, for stealing a beehive.

Majority of her convict records have her as born in Kilmurry abt 1811.

The issue I’m having is her death certificate names her parents as David Welsh and Mary Mangane.

I am wondering if any of these names or circumstances are familiar to anyone? She may have changed her name.

I do know that her first child born was William and his father was John Johnson, prior to transportation.

Any help or guidance for further searching would be extremely appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Kerry 🤗

  • Hi,

What were the names of Mary Lenihan's children, the two who were born in Ireland? Have you looked for them in Irish church records at Irishgenealogy.ie?

IF Mary's father was named Walsh, Mary's maiden name was probably Walsh.  But sometimes info on death certs is unreliable. Mary didn't provide it. Someone else did.

The Australian records note that Mary Lenihan was a widow when she was transported. She was likely married to a Lenihan.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Patricia,

Thankyou so much for your reply. My name was supposed to be Patricia Anne as I was born on St Patricks Day but my Mother insisted on Kerry so that's the name I was baptised with. Lovely to connect with you.

I have the baptism record for her son that was born in Ireland and his name was William Johnson. John Johnson was his Father and my Grandmother was pregnant with Mary whilst imprisoned in the Cork Penitentiary prior to transportation. John was in gaol at the time and died in there. Mary came out to Australia with the two children. I haven't been able to find a marriage certificate for her with John Johnson so am assuming they weren't married. I'm not 100% sure that John was Mary's Father but am assuming so.

Mary Married a Thomas Greenhalgh in Australia and I descend from their daughter, Rose/Rosina Greenhalgh.

I haven't been able to source any birth information in Ireland for Mary under the name 'Linehan' in Cork. One convict document has her born in Dublin but the rest are Kilmurray Cork.

    She is certainly a mystery.

Not sure if any of this helps Patricia but I do appreciate your time and input.

    Cheers,

    Kerry :)
