Trying to find where in  Co Clare my ancestors came from.

Specifically ELLEN McINERNEY, born c. 1815, daughter of Jeremiah, a blacksmith, and  Eliza ?, maiden name O'Brien.

Elllen married William Ahern, farmer, also of Clare. They had seven children: Bridget,Thomas, Martin, Mary Ann, Jeremiah, Susan and Margaret.

Ellen arrived in Australia December 1861 with her three youngest - Jeremiah (my g. grandfather born c.1841), Susan and Margeret. Thomas arrived a few years earlier.

A case of Guinness to whoever solves the mystery!

  • Hi Ric

It's amazing how hard a bloke will work for a guiness!

The nearest match I can get for Ellen McInerney's birth record in Clare is 1809; the next one is 1845. These are on the aptly-named www.rootsireland.ie/ It charges to view the full record and the parents aren't correct but the parish is PARTEEN RC

There are also records of the children of William Ahern: Jeremiah 1851 Catherine 1835 John 1837 all in Parteen RC parish but I see Catherine & John aren't on your list.

The King family tree on ancestry has Ellen's parents as Jeremiah and ELIZA O'Brien but I couldn't find that marriage or children either! No Clare marriage records on roots Also tried findmypastireland & www.irishgenealogy,ie/

As you probably know there are some McInerneys in the Tithe Applotments (1823-37 & free online)in Kilmurry Clare www.clarelibrary,ie has some Aherns & McInerneys as freeholders in the 1820's but still no Jeremiah!

There's a few McInerneys and Aherns in Clare in the current Irish phone directory

No guinness for me so I hope someone else does better for you.

  • Thanks Clare. Will keep chipping away. A shame most of our death certs etc don't give a little more detail, simply stating county of birth only. I have however found one that does better  - a g. grandmother who was born in Portaferry.      regards     ric

  • G'day Ric

Hope the trip is going well.

Am at the CH Family History Centre having a look for your forebears.

rootsireland.ie has 541 William Ahern birth/baptisms but none in Clare

There are 43 Aherns in Clare but no Williams. Are you sure he was from Clare?

The Tithe Applotments 1824-37 (free) have 30 Aherns in Clare including 1 William in Mt Catherine Kiltenanlea 1824 so maybe this is a father or uncle for your bloke

The 1831 Census (free - it's with the 1901 & 1911 censuses) has 2 Aherns including a William in Terridoo Clyde (Townland) Keenaght (Barony) Batteagh (Parish)

    Happy travels

    Col

  • I'm happy to report that the mystery seems to have been solved!
And the answer is they came from the parish of Clare Abbey.

Thanks to Col who found and put me in touch with Jenny Scammell in Melbourne. Turns out Jenny has a copy of an 1875 letter which refers to my McInerney and Ahern families in that parish.

So they get to share the Guinness!

Many, many thanks to all. Ric
