Searching for descendants of John McCarthy and Ellen Murphy of Kinneigh Parish, County Cork. Children: Timothy b abt 1825, Sarah (m Edward Corcoran) b 1827, Mary (m Thomas Lawrence) b 1830, James (m Catherine Driscoll) b 1834. All four emigrated to US 1848-1851 through Boston, first to Lewiston, Maine and then abt 1857 to Dane County, Wisconsin. May be other children. I have an old family note giving address: “?? ?? for Thomas Seymour in the Parish of Killpatrick. Lived in Parish of Kinneigh, Laughinasnaugh (same as township), Inniskein P.O. - Co. Cork Ireland. Mrs. E. McCarthy”. Are these misspellings of Lackinashinnagh and Enniskean?

I would go to www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free irish governement site which has Co. Cork church records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross which includes Enniskeane and Desertserges churches. These parishes are in Kinneigh civil parish.
I think I located Timothys baptismal record in February 1829 in the Enniskeane church. He was shown as Timothy Carthy, father John Carthy and mother Ellen Murphy. Also, saw the record for James in August 1833 same parents and church.
You may find other family records, however, you will be hampered by the high volume of McCarthy and Murphy records.
The townlands are Lackanashinnag and Enniskeen town.
The 1901 census did not have any McCarthy or Murphy households but Enniskeen town had a number of records for both surnames.

Roger,
Thank you so much for your reply. I believe you have confirmed my connection to Kinneigh. I would not have thought about using CARTHY instead of MCCARTHY. Also thanks for correcting the spelling! I found the following baptisms at irishgenealogy.ie for children of John Carthy and Ellen Murphy, all at Enniskeane in the Diocese of Cork & Ross:
6 August 1823 SARAH CARTHY
26 January 1826 MARY CARTHY
29 February 1829 TIMOTHY CARTHY
15 August 1833 JAMES CARTHY
Even better, I also found the marriage record for JNO MCCARTHY and ELLEN MURPHY at Enniskeane and Desertserges on 14 February 1820! So this is a real breakthrough.
With what I know of Irish records and how so many were destroyed, I gather that it is quite rare to have such detailed records available so feel quite fortunate. I am planning a visit to Ireland within the next year or so so I now have a townland and church to visit.
Thanks again, your help is much appreciated!

The Diocese of Cork and Ross for whatever reason did a great job of maintaining records from the first part of the 19th century. In fact my wife's family came from St. Finbarrs in Cork city and they have records back to the late 1700s. It also helps that the records were on the free Irish government site as opposed to Roots Ireland which is a subscription site.
For future reference, the National Library of Ireland plans to put all RC parish registers online for free searching sometime this summer. You will then be able to look at the actual registers. Some of the registers will be hard to read and could be in Latin.

I am the great granddaughter of James, son of John and Ellen Murphy McCarthy. I had James birthday as 15 August but in 1834 as you originally reported. He sailed from Cork to Liverpool and then to Boston in 1851. He then went to Lewiston, Maine, and became a US citizen in Auburne, Maine, on 28 August 1856. James married Catharine Driscoll, also from Cork, on 24 November 1855 in Lewistown Falls, moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and eventually settled in Dunkirk, Wisconsin, which is now part of Stoughton, Dane County. There they farmed and raised 12 children, many of whom stayed in that area. James died on 18 December 1917 and is buried in St. Anne's cemetery in Stoughton.
I am currently in Ireland and plan to go to the Enniskeane area in a week or so. I understand that Kinneigh Parish has merged with Castletown, but this is the first I heard of Enniskeane as a possibility so I thank you. Jane McCarthy McMillan

Hello Jane, good to hear from you. My great grandmother was Sarah McCarthy, sister of your great grandfather James. Sarah married Edward Corcoran sometime around 1850. I don’t know whether they were married in Ireland or Maine, but they were definitely married before they reached the Stoughton/Dane County area because their first two children were born in Maine. I know the two families were close, both in relationship and distance, because I have some diaries from an aunt which went into great detail into their family visits, attending each other’s funerals, etc. for many years. I have visited the St. Ann cemetery in Stoughton several times as my grandfather and great-grandparents were buried there.
I’m glad you are in Ireland and will have a chance to go to Kinneigh. I will be very interested in hearing what you find in Enniskeane at the church, perhaps the burials of John McCarthy and Ellen Murphy? I’d also be interested in exchanging information on the early days to see if you have any sources different than mine, if you would like to compare notes please contact me directly at tmcorcoran@yahoo.com. Enjoy your visit to Kinneigh and I’ll look forward to hearing about it.
Thanks,
Tim
