I am searching for a friend whose ancestors were from Kinsale. The families that I researching are Keohane and Desmond.   I'm not sure of the parish.  The information that I found is limited.  Thomas J. Keohane born 19 Feb 1873.  He emigrated to America.  His US marriage record shows that his parents were Cornelius Keohane & Mary Desmond.  I found online a marriage record for a Cornelius & Mary on 28 January 1864 in Kinsale.  I also found other children (assuming they are the correct parents) 9 in total . Some of the birth records are say Kinsale and others Courceys, Cork.

Any sources, help or information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I believe these records are the 1901 and 1911 census records for your Keohane family. They lived in Ringrone civil parish which is near Kinsale. I also checked civil death index records and found a Cornelius Keohane who died in the first quarter of 1911 right before the 1911 census was taken on March 31st 1911.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Roger,

Let me begin by thanking you for your time and effort researching the Keohane family!

I reviewed the census records and compared them to what I have.  I found birth records for Timothy (1865), Michael ('66), John ('67), Denis ('68), Jeremiah ('71).  All were born in Courceys.  Thomas was born 1873, Catherine ('75), Ellen ('78) and Cornelius ('73) all in Kinsale.  The ages of the children do not quite match with what is recorded in the census.  I do not have a Hannah in my records.

What I found recently was that Thomas was living in 1900 with a James Keohane in Boston. James was born 25 Sept 1867 in Clonakilty to Timothy Keohane and Mary Donovan.  In the 1906, Thomas, another Thomas, Cornelius, James and Denis Keohane are all living together in Boston.  I've been unable to find records on Denis after 1906 and wondered if he went back to Ireland since his name does appear  in the 1911 Irish census.

Is Ringrone Parish, Courceys and Clonakilty in close proximity to one another? Are they considered to be part of Kinsale? My hunch is that James Keohane's father Timothy may have been a brother to Cornelius Keohane. James died in 1912 and his widow and daughters lived in the same house as Thomas. There most probably was a family connection which makes me wonder if Cornelius Keohane was from Clonakilty.

I'm certain that I confused you as I'm quite confused myself. This is my first attempt in researching Irish  ancestors.  It's quite challenging!

Again, thank you for your help!

    My best,

    ~Susan

Clonakilty is not close to Kinsale. It is about a 40 minute drive.

Lispatrick Lower townland (where the Keohane family in the 1901 census lived) is about 12 kilometers south of Kinsale. Lispatrick Lower is in Ringrone civil parish and the barony is Courceys.

Census ages don't always match up with birth records.

Timothy and Cornelius could be brothers.
