Musgrave/McAuliffe

I checked the 1901 census and there were no Musgraves in all of Leitrim. Were James and Catherine/Susan still inr Ireland?

Hello Roger - thank you for such a speedy response!

To the best of my knowledge, both James and Catherine (Susan) both lived in Ireland their whole lives.  The information we have is a bit thin, only what came thru my grandfather George Auliff Musgrave.  We were told that James passed January 2, 1931 in Derrinasoo and Catherine/Susan passed October 17, 1916, also Derrinasoo.

I note that for my grandfather, his middle name is shown as AULIFF - no 'e' on the end - but I've always seen his mother's maiden name as Auliffe, that may be an error.   My mother noted in a baby book that Catherine was known as 'Susan', so am unsure of which would be her first or middle name.

My grandfather's records show that he was born 2/8/1880 in Derrinasoo.  His application for US Naturalization shows he arrived in NY April 22, 1899.  I have both WW1 and WW2 draft registration cards; the WW2 one shows his place of birth to be County Sligo, Ireland.  However, I was told that Derriansoo is actually in Roscommon - is that correct?

I know that some of my grandfather's siblings emigrated also, but his sister, Susan Musgrave reportedly born 2/3/1888 in Sooey and passed July 25, 1968 in Roscommon.  Sister, Eliza Ann (aka Annie) born 1885 died in Scurmore, date unknown. Brother, William Robert, birth yr unknown, died 2/10/1942 in Leitrim Village, Leitrim.  Brother, James, born 6/29/1888, Sooey, died 3/14/1967 Saintfield, County Down, No. Ireland.

Most of this information has come to me thru another cousin, who is since deceased.  She also told me that James father (my ggrandf) was also named James, married to an Elizabeth.  That James may have been born 1801, died 2/13/1881 in Derrinasoo.

I so appreciate you taking the time to look for any information on my family!  As you know, Ireland's records are difficult to research especially from such a distance.  Thank you very much for anything you can turn up!

After you mentioned Roscommon, I checked for the townland and it is spelled Derreenasoo and it is located in Tumna civil parish northeast Roscommon on the border with Co. Leitrim. I found the 1901 census record for the family and it shows that Kate and her children were born in Co. Sligo. Also, the reason I could not find them was the name was spelled Musgrove. I also included the 1911 census record for the family. In 1901 there were two other Musgrove families in Derreenasoo. You can go to www.nationalarchives.ie to check them out.

You will find James Musgrave and Kate (Catherine) in the 1901 census underneath the name Musgrove.

Hello Louise! Thank you so much for your reply!  I would be very interested in any information that you might have on James & Stuart's family.  We have not been able to find any solid information on their parents, siblings, etc.  I am truly delighted to find this census record for James & Catherine (Kate - my daughter's name is Kate too - coincidence?) I have been researching for over 20 yrs, and this branch has truly been a brick wall  - so exciting when you can remove even a small brick!

I pulled out my detailed OS maps of Ireland to find Derreenasoo. As I suspected, Derreenasoo is right on the Roscommon/Leitrim border and about 3-4 miles southwest of Drumshanbo. When Irish emigrants came to America, they sometimes said they were from the nearest large town rather than the actual townland. This would explain why George indicated Drumshanbo when he came to America.

McAuliff.  From what I have seen, she was born in County Sligo, so will try to follow up with that.  Thanks again!

I checked the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household list for Co. Sligo and there were only two records with a surname close to McAuliffe. I think one of these two is either the father or grandfather of Kate (Susan). Normally a family would name the second son after the mother's father and I believe William was the second son of James and Kate.
