I am planning to visit Macroom in April and I am hoping to find further information regarding my great great GrandmotherHannah Riordan who left Macroom for Australia in 1853 with her cousing Mary Cronin. Hannah was born c 1828 to Timothy Riordan a cooper and Ellen Cronin. Hannah is believed to have worked for the wealthiest man in Macroom before leaving.
I am looking for advice as to where to look for further information regarding Hannah and her family and perhaps any records of her emigration. Family names used by Hannah and her husband Thomas that seem to fit with her family are Ellen, Eugene, Cornelius and Valentine.
Thank you for any help

Thank you so much for this information Roger. I think things must have been verydifficult in Macroom in 1853 which why she came here with just her cousin, brave girl. Do you know if there are burial records or emigration records for Macroon?
With thanks
Rosalie

Rosalie:
I don't think you will find any emigration records. I assume you are looking for burial records pre 1864? RC churches rarely maintained thos records and it appears Macroom does not have any records,

Doesn't sound like I will have much luck in finding out any more information. We have found her coming in to Australia 1853 she was 25. She married Thomas Daws 1857. Family legend has it that Hannah worked at a Castle in Cork so I am guessing the castle in question wasn't too far from home. The ship Hannah sailed on was the "Thames" and it left Liverpool in Oct 1852 arrived early 1853. She seems to have been a bounty emigrant and had an employer waiting for her in Melbourne or Port Phillip as it was then known and Hannah was able to read and write. Another interesting family story is that Hannah was the cousin of Daniel O'Connell and or his wife Mary. I have heard this story before from another family of Riordans who settled in Victoria, they came from Tralee but I haven't as yet found a link between them all as yet. I know Mary O'Connell's family were not affluent even though her father was a Doctor.
Thanks so much for your help Roger. I know things were pretty dire in Macroom with the famine so I can only assume Hannah came to Australia to escape such horrible times and she did very well.
Cheers

Did you have any luck finding your Riordan Cronin connections?

Hi Reets,
I did have a very good look at the parish records some time ago and I think I have connected as best I could.
I think Timothy Riordan and his sister Ellen married brother and sister
Timothy married Ellen Cronin
Issue: 1829 Owen sponsors MIchael Connel and Honora Cotter of Macroom
1832 Bartholomew sponsors Bartholomew Cronin and Mary Murphy
1834 Mary sponsors Cornelius Cronin and Margaret Breen
1837 Ellen sponsors Cornelius Shea and Joan Cronin
1840 Julia sponsors John Buckleyand Mary Creedon
Last three born Masseytown
his sister Ellen and her husband Bartholomew married 22 Jan 1826 Kilnamartyra Witness John Buckley (he was sponsor or Julia Riordan see above) and Daniel Duggan Bartholomew is described as being of Macroom and lived at Masseytown
Issue: 1832 John sponsors Corny Cronin and Johanna Cronin (siblings of Bartholomew?)
1834 Daniel sponsors Corny Cronin and Joan Deasy
1836 Mary sponsors Corny Cronin and Joan Deasy
Looking at John Buckley witness in marriage of Ellen Riordan and Bartholomew Cronin and sponsor of Julia, Timothy Riordan daughter, he maried Catherine Riordan in Macroom 4 Feb 1845
There was a Eugene Riordan and Elizabeth Moynahan of Shannivallishene Kilnamartyra who had children between 1807 and 1827. Eugene is a name that appears in the children of Hannah Riordan and Thomas Daws in Australia as does Cornelius and Ellen.
Thats as far as I have been able to get but I will have a further look.
Cheers

These are all names connected to my Sweeny Line. William Swiney married Mary Cronin 1800 in Macroom, Cork, His son John married Mary Connel 1842 Clondrohid, Cork. John Swiney & John Cronin farmed in Knockraheen on land owned by H Massy. His grt grandson John McSweeney married Hanna Riordan 1906 in Clondrohid, Cork. James Buckly was a sponsor for the baptism of John Swiny, 1809, Knockopill .Timothy Buckly was a sponsor for his daughter's Julia's baptism 1857. Cornelius is a name that appears to come from my Swiney Cronin line. While Eugene comes from my Sweeny Riordan relations. Timothy comes from my Connell Kelleher line.

I'm sure there is a connection there I will have a further look. I know my Riordan's lived at Masseytown and Hannah was said to have worked for the richest man in Macroom I assumed that could have been at Macroom Castle seat of the Hedges-White family perhaps it was Massey. I know there were another group of Riordan's in Victoria Australia who no doubt were connected to my Hannah Riordan but I haven't found the link. I do know there was talk that the family were related to Daniel O'Connell the other Riordan's in Creswick Victoria had the same story in their family. Hannah Riordan daughter of Timothy Riordan and Ellen Cronin emigrated to Victoria Australia with her cousin Mary Cronin who sadly died during the voyage. Hannah married Tom Daws who was planning to return to England they had several children THomas from whom I descend, George Valentine, Frederick Eugene, William Cornelius and Ellen Isabella . Hannah was said to have had a "waspish temper"

So there is a Timothy Riordan married to Ellen Cronin with children: Daniel (1841) Mary (1844) & Timothy (1847) found in the 1852 Griffths at townland GARRANE, SOUTH, Parish of DROMTARRIFF, Union of MILLSTREET. I don't know if this is the same family, but since the last birth for masseytown was Ellen 1837, it is a possibility.
