My great grandfather emigrated to the US in 1899(?) and was born around 1877 (US census record for 1910). The Eli's island papers state this and also that his city of origin was Daneraile in Ireland.  This must have been a mistake and thinking was really Doneraile.  The real problem here is that at the moment I cannot seem to find a birth certificate for a Maurice Walsh in Doneraile, and the fact that Maurice was killed in Feb 1914 by a trolley car on the Brooklyn bridge, when my grandfather, Joseph Patrick was just 10 years old.  Within a few years, he and his siblings were all in an orphanage, mother Katie disappears from the historical record also.  He was very embarrassed by all of this and never spoke of it or his fathers past.  All I could get out of him is that our people came from around Cork, and Doneraile is around Cork.  I need the help of anyone named Walsh in Doneraile, maybe a story, an old letter, really anything.  Would love to know his parents names.  I am bringing my 82 year old father to visit the homeland this spring (May 2015) and would love to actually get him to the right place.  Thank you,

You posted the same message yesterday and I'm wondering if you saw the comment by Ahoghill Antrim providing you with the civil birth index record for a Maurice Walsh born in 1877 and instructions on how to get a copy from the general Register Office. The birth record will show the names of his parents and where they lived.

I also went on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and worked with their indexes. There was an 1877 baptismal record for a Maurice Walsh in the Buttevant RC church records. Buttevant is not far from Doneraile. The parents for thsi Maurice were Michael and Margaret.

Roots is a pay site to view transcriptions of church records and Roots now asks that you purchase a subscription.

As an aside I looked in the 1901 census for the Doneraile area and did not see an older Michael or Margaret Walsh.

  • Thank you very much Roger. I will check into the civil birth index.  The information you sent is fantastic and I cannot thank you enough.

  • Thank you so much Anne Marie,

That does work out much better with his age stated on his death record, still a year plus off, but much much closer and from Doneraile to boot!  His Mother's name makes sense, since his first born, a girl, was named Mary.  This is all very exciting and may just be the one.  Thanks again,
