Hi Col
thanks for your reply.
I have the names of John and Mary;s children, Connor was know as Cornelious and Abigail known as Deborah. What I am trying to establish is the parents of John Fitzgerald b 1828, I have found a John Miller in the 1824 Directory, he was also living in Fair lane, he may have been married to a Joanna Driscoll this is as far as I have managed to get. I have many names as sponsers for the children of John and Mary, research done by Paul Mccotter a geneologist in 2004. one name stands out a Walter, who was mentioned in some other Mallow records but have not been able to get any further information on him.
I have also seen a newspaper article about John Fitzgerald and Patrick Corbett who were Mallow town commissioners c 1840-60, it mentions Patrick's house lights being on when they were collecting money for Mr O'connell to get him into parliament.
Patrick and John appears to have had shops in Main street and Lackanalooha c 1850.
I wonder if the statue of John Fitzgerald in Mallow is related to our family, I was told all Fitzgerald's in Mallow were related.
I hope to visit Mallow again soon but would welcome any further information before my visit.

Hi Clare
Thank-you so very much for the information.
I wonder if you found any siblings or other relatives?
I would like to investigate further but don't expect you to do all the work, could you point me in the right direction. I am so very excited to to find more information after so many years of trying to go back further in my family tree. I wonder if I can get any documents from Mallow heritage centre?
My kindest regards

Hi June,
I checked www.rootsireland.ie and could not find any other children for David Fitzgerald and Johanna Buckley.
The Mallow Heritage Center is also using www.rootsireland.ie so you could check the records yourself online it is a subcription site but you can view 1000 recordsd for one off payment of 25 Euro. Take note that they do not have original records you can only view transcriptions.

Hi Anne Marie,
it was kind of you to research my family.
spoke to my cousin last night and he has a record of John Fitzgerald being born in Baldahene Mallow and that he thought his parents were John Fitzgerald and Johanna Driscoll? can I ask how you made a connection to David Fitzgerald and Johanna Buckley?.
We have Cornelius in our family to this day but think its possible that he may be named after the Corbett side of the family, I noted a Cornelius Corbett on Mallow names website.
Kindest regards

Hi June, I made the connection assuming the birthyear you gave is correct, this John is the only John Fitzgerald born in 1828 Mallow parents John Fitzgerald and Johanna Buckley. John Fitzgerald and Johanna Driscol had indeed a son John Fitzgerald who was baptised 4 February 1821 , so seven years earlier then the year you gave us. I leave you to decide :) Regards, Anne Marie

Hi Ann Marie,
Were the parents you found John Fitzgerald and Joanna Buckley or David Fitzgerald Joanna Buckley.?
Do you know if there were any siblings for John Fitzgerald parents John Fitzgerald and Joanna Driscoll.
I will try the roots website to try and track the elusive Walter.
Many thanks

Hi June,
Parents David Fitzgerald and Johanna Buckley had the son John born in 1828 the birthyear you supplied. This is the John I found first
No other children for JOHN Fitzgerald and Johanna Driscol recorded
Who is Walter ? There is a Walter Fitzgerald baptised 1 June 1832 in Mitchelstown County Cork, father John Fitzgerald and Margaret Douane . For this couple it is also the only recorded child

Mary Corbett married John Fitzgerald on the 20th April 1850 in Mallow (RC) no parents mentioned. Mary was baptised 15 August 1833 in Mallow, parents Patrick Corbett and Mary Hartnett, can not find any Cornelius Corbett in this family

Hi Ann Marie
you are so kind.
I appreciate that you are busy helping others trace family in Ireland.
Our family are so proud of our roots in Mallow and that John Fitzgerald and Patrick Corbett were Mallow town commissioners. I am inclined to think John's parents were John and Joanna Driscoll as we had a birth date for Mary Corbett as 1838, so guess John's birth date could have been late or earlier r than 1828.
I also think much must be made of traditional name's in families at that time for example first son named after father's father etc. I note though that the children of John Fitzgerald and Mary Corbett were know by diffrent names after baptism Cornelius was baptised Connor and Abigail was always known in our family as Deborah. I note a Patrick Harnett sopnsor at Connor's baptism. Walter Fitzgerald was a sponsor for Joanna, Mary first born daughter sponsors Michaell Scanell and Abby Donaghue who I assume to be Mary Corbett's sister, John sponsors Owen Mcarthy and Johanna Sheehan. I also note a Johanna Sheehan as a sponsor at baptism in Manchester England and again assume she may have been a sister of Mary Corbett.
Would I be able to find more information from Mallow library on John Fitzgerald and Patrick Corbett as town commissioners \and leasholders of properties in Mallow and Lackanalooha.
I have seen a list where John and patrick contributed a shilling each to Daniel O'connell fund.
I am also intrested to find a connection with John F staue in Mallow.
The geneologist I workd with in 2004 said all the Fitzgerald's in Mallow would have been related is some way.
I did see the house in Fair street when I visited years ago and gain assume the forge which was demolished a few years ago is where Cornelius served his apprenticeship.
I do wonder what brought the family to Manchester late 1870's as they obviously survived the famine.
Thanks again Ann Marie for all your support.

Just a thought Ann Marie,
could it be possible John and Walter were half brothers, John's mother may have died and John snr re married.? -

June I had the same thought yesterday that John had remarried.
Regarding Mary Corbett there is no 1838 baptism in Mallow for a Mary Corbett, this is the only possible date Mary was baptised 15 August 1833 in Mallow, parents Patrick Corbett and Mary Hartnett, She would have been 5 years younger then John Fitzgerald. As we know from the marriage registration that Patrick Corbett and Mary Hartnett were her parents it is 100% certain this baptism is her in 1833.

Ann Marie,
Thank-you for this, the Cork examiner article is so intresting. I feel even more sure that John and Patrick were Mary and John's father's, it is of course possible if John was born 1821 that he could be the John Fitzgerald commissioner but wonder if at age 23 he would be appointed a town commissioner, I also not 2 John Fitzgerald's living at different house numbers in Fair Lane,of course always the possibility he owned/leased both.I think it looks likely that John Fitzgerald and Patrick Corbett were highly respected in Mallow.
I really do want to visit soon but most likely next spring and would love to meet you Ann Marie.
Kindest regards

Young yes, but it all depends what his father was etc , it was not what you knew in these days but who you knew, he might have been brought in at a young enough age, not impossible.
I will be in Mallow library tomorrow where they have local journals that you can read there so I will have a look.
We should meet up yes that would be lovely and hopefully we have most of the answers by then.

Regarding your question about the statue of J,J Fitzgerald in Mallow town, this was John Joseph Fitzgerald born 16 Feb 1872 at Shortcastle Mallow Town. He was trained as a teacher and later became involved in patriotic movements and became secretary of United Irish League.
Fitzgerald played an active role in establishing an Urban District Council. He became
the first chairman of the U.D.C. and initiated the building of Davis Terrace. He was
elected to Cork County Council in 1902. He devoted much of his time to helping the
poor, casting aside all other matters to assist them.
His death, aged 34, on the 6th of April 1906 caused a profound shock throughout
Mallow. It was decided to erect a monument in memory of this aspiring young
politician who had done so much for his town. On Sunday, the 13th of October 1907,
William O?Brien unveiled the Fitzgerald monument at the end of the street that would
one day bear his name. He said ?Ireland has not in our time lost a more able or
unselfish young patriotHis parents were John Fitzgerald and Margaret Feneton

Hi Anne Marie
thanks so much and once again I really appreciate you helping me, when I visited Mallow in 2004 with my late mother we were so dissapointed that the heritage centre was closed, I did write To Matina Aherne , but the costs and the geneologist charges were expensive with so little information, obviously now I have enough to explore further , and like you say by spring with your kind assistance I will be able to really enjoy my visit and maybe even find relatives still living in Mallow, I did write to the local paper and to Dan Joe Fitzgerald Mayor of Mallow but heard nothing, which makes me wonder if my family let anybody down by leaving Mallow to live in England.
I know that a relative used to send a goose to Manchester every christmas and visits were made in the 1920's , it appears that 3 children of John and Mary Corbett did not come to live in Manchester, Mary the eldest was believed to have gone to America and John and Johanna stayed in Mallow, I am wondering if that John was the father of John F the politician who has a statue in Mallow .
I am so excited about discovering more about my family Fitz and Corbett, solving puzzles like Walter and why Cornelius got his name, perhaps another child named John was a first born who died, but where would Cornelius name come from, we have three family members with that name the eldest is 96 and still going strong. We have relatives in Dublin who kept in touch with the Manchester Fitzes up to the 1940's, I am in e mail contact but they know less than me.
Anne Marie I would love to meet you and thank-you in person for your kindness and support.
Kind regards

Hi June,
I am going to the library this Thursday, will give you an update Thursday evening. The Healy's lived at nr.3 Fair Street Mallow town in 1901, I must check if nr. 34 is still in the original state, one of my Facebook friends now lives at nr 3,
Must ask a couple of people about your grandfather John Joseph, I have a feeling some people might know about him.
Talk to you soon and have a nice weekend,

Hi Anne Marie,
I wonder if you could also check at the library if the Earl's of Desmond ever tried to buy back Mallow castle and Park, I understand Patrick and Michael Jephson may still be the owners.
Kindest regards
June

The Castle was sold by the Jephson family in 1928 and bought by the McGinn Family from Washington DC.
It has recently been bought by Cork County Council
