Am searching for information about my great grandfather's family in Ireland.  His name was William B. Coughlin.  He was born June 12, 1825 and lived in or near Mallow.  He emigrated to the USA around 1848-1853 and settled in Dubuque, Iowa.  He married Catherine Kearney from County Louth in 1863.  He died in Dubuque in 1827 at 102 years of age.  He had five siblings: Ellen, James, John, Margaret and Michael.  I believe Michael was adopted.  I don't know if these siblings stayed in Ireland or emigrated to the U.S. or elsewhere.  Any information on them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Bill

  • Dear Bill,

I have checked www.rootsireland.ie for  and found 2 possible matches  for William Coughlan/Coughlin  but both were born in Lisgoold about a 50 minute drive from Mallow both were born in  1825 more then likely they are related.

www.rootsireland.ie is a pay-to-view website  with transcriptions of the original records, take note that Civil registration did not start till 1864 in Ireland

This might be Williams passenger record from Castlegarden http://www.castlegarden.org/quick_search_detail.php?p_id=511593

    Hope this helps,
