My great grandfather came to America in 1852.  He ran away from home and changed his name.  He was known as John Thomas Brady throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Oklahoma.  However, it is believed that his real name was Patrick Quin/Quinn. Family information states that he was from Cork.

It is known that he had a sister whose name was Sabine.  They were thought to be twins born about 1846.  Sabine's married name was Brookman.

It is a family story that the Brady surname was chosen because it belonged to the maternal family.

My cousins and I have done DNA testing in hopes of locating our Brady/Quinn relatives. If you have any information regarding Patrick Quinn aka as John Thomas Brady please respond.  I have posted a picture of Patrick Quin aka John Thomas Brady.  Thank you.

  • Hi Aileen,

If Patrick went to the USA in 1852, he must have traveled with his parents as he was only around 6 years old at the time according to the birth information you give. Did you check the 1861 US census records for a family? This might reveal more information about the family

We will need more information about the family as Patrick Quinn is a very common name all over Ireland , Cork allone has 5 Patrick Quinns born in 1846

When and where did Patrick aka Brady die for example

    Thank you for your response.

John Thomas Brady (Patrick Quin) died in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 11, 1920.  He was buried in the Bartlesvile Cemetary in Bartlesville, OK on January 14, 1920.  He was staying with his son, James Alexander Brady.  My mother Margaret was 18 years at that date in that home.

  • Found a 1920 US census record for James Alexander Brady born 1874 , fathers name is listed as John T. Brady born about 1846 Ireland, emigrated 1853.

It looks like John T has been in the military, also found an army enlistment for a Patrick Quinn enlistment Age: 15, in 1861  county were born GALWAY IRELAND. He was enlisted in New York for a period of 5 years

Now we have a birth year and place we can look  for a record in Ireland

  • Galway has too many matches, see below, but all is not lost yet, I believe that Patrick Quinn emigrated with his parents in 1853/1852 as he was too young to make the journey on his own. They should be listed in  the 1861 US census somewhere and maybe even a passenger record in the Castlegarden passenger database from New York. Once we know a parents name we can probably find the correct baptism record in Galway
