I have been researching my mother’s family tree (Daly). I’m particularly interested in finding out more information about my great, great grandfather Bartholomew (Bartle) Daly. Family information says that the Daly family originated from Cork – so I’m interested to find out where in Cork he was born.

This is what I’ve found so far:

Bartle Daly married Christina Fenning in St Brigid’s Church, Clara, Offaly on 21st September 1844 (Certificate of Marriage issued by St Brigid Church, Parish of Clara). Witnesses were James Fenning and Mary Fenning.

Bartle Daly was born in 1822 and died in 1917, age 95 years at Castletown Geogheghan, Westmeath at his son John’s farm. Christina Fenning was born in 1822 and died on 17th February 1867, age 45 years in Clara.

The Griffith’s Valuation gives Bartle Daly ‘s address as being 18 Church St Clara in 1855. He was a carpenter and family information indicates his employment was at the Clara Mills.

Bartle Daly and Christina Fenning’s children were: Elizabeth 1846, Bartholomew born 23rd February 1849 and baptised 24th February 1849 in the Church of St Brigid, Clara - my great, grandfather (certificate issued by St Brigid’s Church, Parish of Clara), Daniel 1851, Joseph 1853, Stephen 1855, John 1860.

  • Hi Christine,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone who recognises this Daly family and contacts you to help you further your research.

Church records are still mostly held locally however, as opposed to having a central repository so it will be difficult to find his place of birth using these. There are some places where you can search online, however it may be difficult to discern whether the results are relevant to your family or not without more information:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only Catholic records from the Diocese of Cork and Ross have been uploaded. This Diocese incorporates Cork City and some parts of Cork county.

Do you know his father?s name? if you do, you could try searching for him in the Tithe Applotment Books. Theses are earlier land records dating 1823-38 and may help you narrow down some parishes of origin. Here is the link:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

I was in the registry of deeds today, and found a deed concerning my ggg grandfather, Markham McCarthy had purchased a plot in Princes St in 1832. Apparently it included houses 37, 38, 39 Princes street and it was bounded on the North by the dwelling house of Bartholomew Daly. Nothing else about Bartholomew, I am afraid, but the propertyu is described that way again in 1842, which suggests that he was still there.

I was interested in the name as I am also a Daly

    All the best,

    Charlie
