Not finding actual "Parish" info, maybe because I look at things as Town/City and State. I do not know.  But, I am looking for info on: Jeremiah O'Sullivan, who married Ellen Canty, I do not have their birth/marriage/death dates. I do know they had 6 children;

Timothy ba 1854 - d 1-12-54, born and died in Aghabullogue, Cork, he married Ellen Morrissey [b 12-31-1859 - d 6-5-1937].

Cornelius b in Aghabullogue

Denis b in Aghabullogue, married a Foley

Ellen b 3-20-1871 in Canaway, Cork

Albina b 3-15-1875 Ballincollig, Cork - d 2-24-1945 in Cork, Cork

Edward b 2-17-1877 in Ballincollig, Cork

This is the furthest in the line that we have found, we do have minor info after this, very little though.  My father Jon Winans O'Sullivan [b 8-20-1919 - d 8-20-1979] never knew he had family anywhere except one brother in Arkansas.  Family was VERY important to him, we would like to fill in some blanks and understand where they all went.  Any help is monumental and I thank you dearly.

I took a quick look at www.familysearch.org looking for children of Jeremiah O'Sullivan and Ellen Canty from 1864-1880. Civil registration started in 1864. I found five children from baptismal index records including one (Mary) that you do not mention. The surname was Sullivan rather than O'Sullivan which may have been a result of government rules.

    Ellen 3/20/1871 Mary 12/14/1872 Abina 3/15/1875 Edward 2/17/1877 Denis 6/6/1879

I'm curious about Denis because your note implied that he was born earlier when the family was in Aghabulloge civil parish. Maybe the first Denis died and they named a second boy Denis.

I will look at the 1901 census and see if I can find any family members. The fact that Sullivan/O'Sullivan is so common in Cork complicates the search. Ballincollig is in Carrigrohane civil parish which is south of Cork City.

  • Roger,

WOW, just wow.  I am amazed at how quickly anyone responded....and to have that much info already...... THANK YOU.

Dropping the " O " did/does make things difficult for searching sometimes. Honestly, quite often I forget about it. So thank you for the remindeer, for which I appreciate.

I'd like to say I have alot of records to back up the info I have in my note-book, but I do not.  My half-sister and my mother has done most of the work and I believe my sister holds the records better then Fort Knox. I would like to fill in some of the blanks to make it easier on my mother who is not very computer literate....and is a bit shy, so has difficulty asking questions sometimes.

What I have on Denis.... is just what I wrote..... though near as I can tell "Denis" was a favored name. Jeremiah named a son Denis. Jeremiah's son, Timothy named a son Denis [b 1883 ? Collineagh].  Jeremiah's son, Denis named a son Denis [b 1914 Kerry Pike].

Many thanks for the tip on the web site. This is all quite new for me, made more difficult by memory issues.

I looked at the 1901 census www.census.nationalarchives.ie but could not find a record that tied to the names and area. It would help to know which male Sullivans/O'Sullivans stayed in Ireland. I assume your father's father emigrated.

  • Dear Ro:

In addition, you might also note that the website:  www.irishgenealogy.ie has a lot of Cork records on it as well.  This is a government website  and it is hoped that in the future all counties will be put onto it.  At the moment, Cork, Kerry, Dublin, Carlow & Monaghan (I think) are on it.

I have Sullivans as well from Cork.  The name is numerous, but as Roger stated, looking without the "O" may assist you.

All the best to you in your family research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
