John William CAREY married Matilda BYRNE on 1 November, 1826 at Appin, NSW. The marriage was registered at St. Mary's, Sydney although it took place at Appin.John worked for a neighbour of William SYKES (Matilda's stepfather) - William BROUGHTON. Children were:John William - born 3 November, 1827 (my direct line)Mary J. - born 1828Ellen Matilda - born 1831Sarah Frances - born 1832Catherine (Kate) - born 28 December, 1835Michael Patrick - born 16 March, 1837George James - born 21 October, 1839 Matilda and John moved to Sydney and are shown in the 1828 Census with their year old son, John William CAREY and William BYRNE, Matilda's brother.They eventually returned to Appin as their fifth child, Catherine, was baptized there by Fr. Therry on 1 February, 1836.John CAREY was the Licensee of the Union Inn, Appin, from 19 November 1831 until 1836. In 1835 the accommodation at the Inn kept by Carey was described as very comfortable. In October, 1839 their son George James was baptized near Lake George and the 1839 Postal Directory lists a John Carey, Settler at Millbong, Lake George.John William Carey died at Collector 12 January 1870 aged 70 or 71 and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery there with his son Michael Patrick, who died before him in 1866.Matilda lived 30years longer until 20 August 1899. She is also buried at Collector and although her headstone states her age was 100 year her DeathCertificate and Obituary says she was 99, born at Parramatta. She had resided with her daughter Mary, whose husband Patrick BYRNE of Warra Willa had also recently died. Six of Matilda's children were still living and at the time of her death it was thought that Matilda CAREY nee BYRNE hadattained the dignity of being the oldest Australian native ie. person born in the colony.
