  • Hi Maureen

Thank you for your query. It can be helpful to our volunteers if you include the sources of information you have already used. On a quick search of the Castle Garden emigration website we found Denis Coughlin aged  two, arriving on the 3-July-1866 on the ship 'Tripoli'. The only other two Coughlin names mentioned for the ship that day were Catherine aged thirty and John aged three?.

Perhaps this is a clue to additional family members?: Do you know much about their emigration other than this? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure.

    US National Archives/Immigration info: http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

On the emigration details for Denis it states he left from Cork (Queenstown) and then Liverpool. It may be worth checking the UK archives for passenger details that may give an actual place of origin in Ireland ( Parish, Townland etc.)

What you need is a location in Ireland - if you can find this - things will open up and you will then be able to search further.

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/

The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive.

We hope that this is of help to you Maureen.

    Kind Regards
