Hello!

I'm hoping someone can help me with my brick wall. My great-grandfather, Daniel Patrick Spillane, was born in  on May 24, 1881 in Ireland. According to my grandfather Walter, Daniel's mother's name was Mary Lynch and he was born in Cork. I'm new at genealogy, and I don't have his birth certificate or any documents from Ireland supporting this and I would love to know how to find them.

Documents that I do have include a passenger list that shows that Daniel came to Boston, Massachusetts on October 31, 1901 from Queenstown, Ireland. He listed Cork as his home city. He listed his sponsor as Mrs. Kelly, an aunt. He listed his birthdate--May 24,1881--on several documents including his WWII Registration, and the 1910, 1920, and 1930 U.S. Census.

Daniel married Mary Crighton from Liverpool on November 27, 1909 in Lynn, Massachusetts. They had ten children, Daniel Patrick, Charles, Vincent, Walter, Bernard, Terence, Mary Lillian, Gloria, Robert and Theresa. He lived in Lynn until his death in 1955.

My grandfather said that our family name was changed when Daniel came into the U.S. He said that it was originally O'Spillane and that his family was from both Cork and Sligo. I have not been able to find any information showing this--its just a family story.

Is there anyone from Cork who might be able to help me make my grandfather's connection between Cork and Boston?

I would appreciate any advice that you send. I'm hoping that one day I can visit Ireland, and see where my ancestors are from!

  • Hello Theresa,

Log onto irishfamilyhistoryfoundation and you will find church baptismal records for your ancestor.  The fact that he was born in 1881 means that there is a governmental record of his birth. Contact  groireland.ie to find out how to get his birth cert.  Generally, on landing in a foreigh country people gave the nearest large town or city as their last address.  The church records may be able to help you find what parish he was born.  Just imput basic information at first and gradually refine your search.

Not all counties are covered by irishfamilyhistoryfoundation and so our government have setup another website irishgenealogy.ie to cover the shortfall for co. cork, Kerry, Dublin and Carlow.  this site is totally free.

You shouldn't have any problems finding your Daniel as he is born in the latter half of the 19th century.

All the best in your search.  If I can help you further, please just ask.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi Theresa,

If Daniel travelled in the latter part of 1901 the 1901 Census at www.nationalarchives.ie has 5 Daniels for Co.Cork but the only one showing age 20 but his mother is a Margaret. Those with a mother Mary are aged 24 and 16.

Family Search .org has 2 Daniels born in Co.Cork for the April/June of 1881 period the ref. are

    Apr/June 1881 Cork Vol 5 page 116 and

    Apr/June  1881 Cork Vol.5 page 203.

A photocopy of these Certs.can be ordered from the GRO Office. Cost 4 Euro each i think.

    Regards for now. Anne.
