Hello,

I'm looking for the parish in Cork of my great grandfather William Francis Devine. He was born 10 Feb 1842 in County Cork. His parents were Daniel Devine and mother Ellen Leary. William came to Boston, Massachusetts around 1860 with his two brothers, Cornelius (b. 1838, C Cork) and Dennis (b. 1835 C Cork). William and Cornelius were slaters / roofers, Dennis was a baker.

Thanks!

    Two possible leads.

The 1829 Tithe Applotment listings show a Daniel Devine in Cashelbeg townland in Desertserges civil parish. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587429/00…

Daniel had a child in 1835 according to your notes. The issue would be was he old enough and in a position to be leasing land in 1829.

Second, I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Cork. There was only one Daniel Devine in Macroney Upper townland in Macroney civil parish. If your Daniel was still alive in 1852 and leasing land possibly this is the correct record.

  • Thanks Roger,

I have come across this information during my research but was unsure how to investigate further. I guess the next logical step would be to join one or both of the parish forums?

Yes. I just went on and there is a parish page for Desertserges and I was able to access. However, even though we appear to have a page for Macroney, I was denied access. I will report this to our office.

You may have done this already but in the upper right hand corner there is a block titled Search Ireland Reaching Out. Enter Devine and see if any old messages come up.
