  • Oops Sorry.  Bambery also spelt Bambury/Bambrey  Timothy son of Richard Bambury both born Ballylongford Kerry.?  Timothy born about 1849/50 Mother Mary Kennelly/Keneally.   Have very little information on Richard Bambery and Mary Kennelly who were born in Kerry but moved to Newmarket Cork.  Timothy came to Australia in 1870's? however I cannot find his name on any shipping arrivals.  Lived in Qld and then NSW.  He married Margaret Forrest in Australia. They were wed 1878. She arrived in 1876.

Forrest:  Margaret daughter of Michael Forrest and Ellen Rahilly born 1856 Newmarket.  Have very little on Michael Forrest and or Ellen Rahilly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks DCP

  • Margaret Keneally born July 2, 1792, Cork. That's all I have on her, other than her married name, Sheehan, died in illinois.

  • Shipping lists hard to find?   The State Libary of Qld  https://www.slq.qld.gov.au/research-collections/family-history  has excellent resoources and staff to assist (sure is free) with your research. Especially as 1870 is not early.

You have marriage names and date - assuming this in Qld. the records will be there. Even in you have to pay $20 approx. for a scan of original Marriage and Birth records. More than 5 years ago I bought one from Goondiwindi (Qld reported) and the assistance from SLQ was excellent.

Another trove of information is the database know as Trove, mounted by NLA in Canberra.  It comprises an extensive scanning of newpapers and other publication, from city papers to small regional ones.  It is digitises some text-searching in provided. However some items can be missed due to OCR error on worn and faded print.

As for NSW (incl Victoria up to 1850+ some teething years) is avaialbe by phone or visit at Kingswood, NSW with free onsite parking is a very large building: the NSW State Archives

When your groundwork is done, make good use of the NLI Parish RC Records, and other resources free-online for Civil Records.

Time to prepare a research plan, and start with much patience, document everything as you proceed  - a research diary!.

Thank you for your information on Australian sites, most of which I have searched.  Since my last post I have found my gt grandfather arriving on a ship arriving in Australia thru Ancestry.  I do have a lot of information on my family in Australia but was mainly searching for information on my ancestors in Ireland.

    Regards DCP

  • Good news that you found your G-gf,  on migrant ship to Aus.  The quality of the scans on A'y are not brilliant.  If your ancestor migrated to South Aus., the archives of that state have free online, very high quality scans of the original shipping records.  NB, estimate is 20% of SA passenger lists are non extant.  Definitely as clear, if not better than the NLA Parish records.

If your ancestor arrived into New South Wales or Victoria pre-Separation of the States (1850-1), then be aware that the NSW State Archives has (on film) additional records such as the Immigration Department interview of newcomers, plus additional records relating to the emigration:   Name and rank of Referee / Character reference.  Personal details e.g. name of parents, living or deceased,  place of residence or townland, any relatives already "in the colony" etc.  I don't believe A'y provides this level of detail.

If you're not in Australia, you can still use Trove, the database of newspapers scanned by the NLA.   If you want more informaiton on Trove, please ask.

  • Hi,

Thank you for your email in relation to my Great, great, grandmother Mary Anne Sullivan born 1820 or 1821 who was born in Cork.   At 16 she set forth by herself to Melbourne, Australia, ( my home town) .... I guess to build a new life which she did  and in 1847 married Samuel Llewellyn Marlow an English convict    She had several daughters - two of which survived. and died in Melbourne  in 1886..   I have no information except that she did not die poor, as the Great, great Grandfather had a business streak and did well.  I no longer live in Melbourne but in Western Australia.

I have no other information and if my granddaughter had not given me a present of having my DNA done and subsequently I joined My Heritage.com I have found out about her.  It is was shock and completely changed my life .  So the Irish Side, no one new about and it is sad as I would like to more into my background here and to her parents and maybe siblings.

So I would appreciate any help, I can find out no more on Heritage.   I know about a lot about Tuatha de Dannan, and the old gods but nothing about my Irish Heritage.

Thanking anyone who can help me.

    Carole Lane (Frohling)
