I am looking for the ancestor and family of my great great grandfather Jeremiah Sullivan.  He was married on 7 February, 1850 to Hannah (or Hanora) Dealy (or Daly), daughter of John Dealy and Mary Sullivan.  There were three children baptized at Bantry, Mary, 9 January 1851, Ellen, October 1852 and Jeremiah, 9 November 1857.  Hannah and the children emigirated to New York, Massachusetts, and California.  I am not sure if Jeremiah emigrated or not.  I've found no further record of him, although Hannah did have another child, Hannah, born in New York City in 1862.  Hannah was a widow by 1880.  Family stories say that Jeremiah was a school teacher.

I know Jeremiah Sullivan is a very common name for this time and place.  My cousins and I are coming to Bantry in October and hope to be able to find something.   Any ideas or leads would be much appreciated.

thank you,

Kathy Sullivan

  • Hi Kathy,

I have no idea , if this will help, but my ancestral home is now occupied by Sullivan's , in Drishanebeg , Skibereen , Cork. The home was originally Murphy's . A Sullivan married a Murphy. Ask at the town visitor center. I was told a story about one of my relatives goin to the visitor center to find our family and the person working knew exactly who they were asking for . Beware though , because apparently the Irish folks are skeptical because of foreigners trying to fraud the folks. I'd be interested how ya make out . Please let me know. I know it's a long shot . Good luck !

  • Thanks Eddie, I'll try that.  Spent today in the library reading the Annals of Beara with my cousin.  My great grandfather was not in there, so we'll keep looking.
