I am looking for information on my 2x Great Grandparents John Cashman born in Cork about 1805 and Mary Catherine McCarthy born in Cork about 1815. They emigrated to New Brunswick Canada sometime in the 1830's. I have no information on any family members of either John or Mary. I know that will make finding parents or siblings very difficult. If it would help John and Mary married in St Johns New Brunswick Canada in about 1835 moving a few years later to Boston then to St Lewis and finally settling in Hudson Wisconsin in the early 1850's.

I would like to find the parents of John and Mary and other siblings.

Thank you to anyone that could help me,

Pat

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for John Cashman baptismal records.. There is one baptismal record in 1805, four in 1806 and four in 1807 but without knowing the parents names, we can't confirm any of the records. In addition, there are a number of Co.Cork RC parishes which do not have records back to 1805. There are too many Mary McCarthy baptismal records around 1815.

You may want to consider DNA testing. Possibly you will get matches with people who have Cashman/McCarthy connections and know more about the origins of the family in Ireland.

  • Roger,

    Thank you for your reply,

I did take a DNA test about 8 years ago on Ancestry and I have uploaded it to many different sites trying to get some matches with my Irish ancestors. No luck so far. All of the DNA matches only go back to John and Mary. There are several trees with a Jeremiah Cashman as Johns father he ended up Philadelphia Pa however I have ruled that out based on DNA results.

I will keep searching you never know someday the right person may pop up.

    Thanks

  • Hi Pat,

I have a John Cashman in my McCarthy ancestors.  They were living in Whitegates, a village in Corkbeg parish in 1830s.  Corkbeg is in the south-east of Cork city. But they remained there.  Might be the same family.

There were still a few Cashmans living there in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi again Pat,

What were the names of their children?  That might give you clues as to the possible names of John and Mary's parents - if they used the Irish naming tradition.

    Olga,

Thanks for the info on the Cashman's. I will try to research that area to see what I can find.

John and Mary had 11 children. When they left Ireland sometime before 1838 they went to Newfoundland I believe that two children were born there.

Michael Cashman born 1838 and Elizabeth Cashman born 1839.

    From Canada they went to Boston then St Louis Mo and then to Wisconsin the rest of the children's names are;

    Patrick born 1840

    John Franklin born 1840 ?

    Thomas born 1842

    Anna born 1847

    Lawrence born 1850

    Mary born 1852

    James born 1855

    Francis born 1856

    Henry born 1859

In Hudson Wisconsin where they finally settled I can find no other Cashman's or McCarthy's that could be siblings or cousins so it appears they were the only ones there families to have settled in this area. I attached a picture of John and Mary if that helps at all.

    Thanks,

    Pat
