My grandfather, Mike Holmes, was born in County Cork in 15 May1862, two years before birth registration. His father was John Holmes (born 1808 County Cork, died 1896 Smoky Hill KS), his mother Johanna O'Leary (born 1821 County Cork, died Smoky Hill KS 1909). The family immigrated to America April 1872. John Holmes was a farmer, as were most of his sons. I recently came across a discharge from Her Majesty's Reg for a John Holmes. It says he is from Riveroller (thought to be either Rearour, near Ballinhassig, or Reavouler in Kilmacabea Civil Parish). I believe his father was Richard Holmes (1788 - 1827) and his mother M. A.Margaretta (1788 - 1872).
After 20 + years I still know almost nothing about the family before thay came to America. Ideas anyone?

Thanks Miriam. I wish that was my Mike Holmes. The baptism date could be right but his parents were John Holmes and Johanna O'leary. Mike was the 7th child born to John & Johanna; the others were Richard (1844), Thomas (1846), John (1852), Johanna (1855), James (1857), and Joseph (1861). Richard immigrated in 1868, Thomas in 1869 with the rest of the family following in 1872.
