I am trying to find the ancestors of John Lilly born in 1833 in Cork. I do not know when he came over from Ireland to England but he is shown in the 1861 English Census age 28 yrs and living in St Luke, Middlesex, England, (London). In this census also is his wife Esther (Woolfe) and his first child age 1 month. He died age 73 in 1906 in Lambeth in London. His first son (also John Lilly) and second son (Walter Edward Lilly) may have been named after his father (?) as these names are not from his wifes family tree?

Thank you very much for your message. It will be easier to find information on the Lilly?s if you can narrow down place of origin to a parish or town.
I did a quick search in Griffith?s Valuation (land records dating from 1848-64) to see if there were any any Lilly?s recorded. The name was not very common in Cork and here are the results:
Unfortunately, Griffith?s doesn?t offer any genealogical information, but it can help narrow down some possible parishes.
There is also an earlier land record available, it is called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). There was one Lilly recorded in these:
Have you tried looking online to see if you can find any church records pertaining to the family? YOu could try searching at:
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only some parts of CO. Cork have been added.
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
