My grandfathers was born in Ladesbridg in 1885. His name was William Flavin, I think his middle name was Patrick. I have emailed Saint Mary’s in Ladysbridge twice with no reply. Can anyone direct me on how to obtain this. I live in Erie, PA USA.

  • Dear Jeannie:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out website and Happy New Year!

You can obtain birth certificates through the General Register Office in Ireland.  The following details apply:

    https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/General-Register-Office.aspx

The form to apply online giving details is below:

    http://lifeevents.hse.ie/

You will note that birth certificates are €20.00 with €2.00 postage for the U.S.

The best of luck to you.  If you need further assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane Halloran Ryan.

  • Dear Jeannie

Further to Jane's reply, you can obtain a copy of the birth entry in the register for free and save yourself €22.00. This is his most likely birth entry for William born in 1883 in Ladysbridge. It is no different from what you will get by ordering a certificate. Here is the link to the birth entry.

Please note this is a corrected entry. His first name originally entered as Michael but if you look to the far right his name was then corrected to William on the 25 April 1884

    Cheers

  • Hi Debra and Jeannie:

Debra has made a good point about obtaining and dowloading the record off the website.  However, you will need the long form original birth certificate for any application for an Irish passport which I believe that you were interested in getting at some stage.

The Irish Genealogy website is a great site to look through--just be aware that not all records are online (all the indexes are) and that there have been some errors in location.  For example, a number of East Clare marriages in the 1890s are located in the Galway Registration District instead of the Tulla/Scariff Registration District.

The very best of luck to you with your research.  If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
