I am currently researching my family history and have got back to a Patrick Dillon (possibly Dillan) born 1821/22.
Also, I recently (last night) made contact with a Dillon 3rd cousin once removed of me, he is not 100% sure that he is decended from the same Dillon as me but thinks that it is extremely likely. He says that his Grandfather told him that our Dillon ancestors originated from the County Cork area.
Also he says that the family rumour is that the Dillons came to England after the Irish famine and were active in 19th century Irish republicanism. I don't know whether this infomation will make it any easier to trace the Dillons further back?
If anyone can help me with my research I would be very grateful if they could contact me.
Thanks

Afternoon
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
As a starting point have you tried www.irishgenealogy.ie to see if a Cork parish baptism or marriage record is registered? (You can always use familysearch too if you do not have a subscription to rootsireland)
Best wishes

Thank you for your reply and sorry for my delay in replying.
Recently I've actually made some further progress which disproves my theory that my Dillons came from Ireland and makes it much more likely that they came from County Meath, sorry for the confusion, I'll put a message up in the Meath forum.

Hello, I am researching Dillon's as part of my Barry research. I am currently in touch with two elderly brothers who originate in Dublin, Patrick is still resident in his parents old family home near to the Ferry Port, I visited him last year, and was put in contact with his brother who lives in Stamford, Linconshire England, not far from where I live in Northampton. I have a little Dillon history in my ancestry tree, and am minded to request autosomal DNA tests as their mother was a Barry, which would support my autosomal research. I have posted in the ancestry message board with no reply, and there were not many listed in the 1901 census - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ there are about the same number of families in the 1911 census which is consitent with other surname groups at that time. There are 4408 individuals listed, but you can also filter by DED, County,Age and given name. There are only 134 individuals in Meath in the 1901 and 141 in the 1911 so that less than twenty families or so. It is possible to cut and paste the results into excel, but first select 100 results returned per page, which in this case won't take long. You can then filter by 'Head of Family' and then follow the URL for each head and again expand the page to get the full data, cut and paste to a new sheet, go back and copy the address too. when you have all the families its worth checking for the others who may be survants or farm labourers with other families. I hope this helps. Mike
