john joseph mcguire (my grandfather) was born Feb 1 1882 (according to his canadian army enlistment records) in county cork ireland. Town or parish unknown.  According to his death certificate His parents were Bernard McGuire and Jane Corcoran  John Joseph died in Brockton Ma on April 10 1937. Other records indicate he was born Feb 1 1880

John had a twin brother Thomas, an older brother James and a sister (unknown).  The family was so poor (living in a mud hut) that they could only keep one twin so John was sent to live with an Aunt (unknown) in England.  He was educated by the Cabatian Brothers in England.  John first met his mother at age 16 and they both travelled to America in the late 1800's or early 1900's. James Mcguire also settled in America in the Brockton Massachusetts area.

John was a gunner for the British army during the Boer War.  I believed he deserted after 8 months He was in RFA Batt 135.

I have a birth certificate for a Bernard McGuire which lists his parents as James McGuire and Ellen McNeil) born 1844 in Lissonuffy Roscommon.  But I am not certain these are Bernard's parents

  • Hi Mark,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Unfortunately, it will be difficult to find more information on Bernard and Jane without knowing where they were born as most church records are still held locally. As civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864 their births would only have been recorded by their local church.

One possibility may be to try to find their marriage certificate. Given the possible years of birth for Bernard it is likely that his parents were married after 1864 so you should be able to find a civil record of this marriage. These records record the couple?s fathers? names and occupations so it will be a start. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

    All the best,

  • Hi Mark

It was very clear to me what you were asking initially. My McGuire emigrated to Australia, yours to the US. I believe (hope) there are emigrations records somewhere, which will provide personal details of the emigrant and residential address at the time of application. Seems logical, though not yet located anywhere!  Are there migration records kept in the US? Are details of Boer War servicement kept in the US?

Overall I've found the McGuire folk hard to trace, so we share that misery. I have subscribed to the RootsIreland repository of parish records, and can have a look around for you. I tried for mine, but my McGuire are still elusive. Were your John Joseph and his mother of Roman Catholic faith?

    Cheers

  • hi Emma Thank you for your reply.  The only record i can find for a bernard McGuire and a Jane Corcoran lists the birth of a son Thomas (Who must have died very young in 1874 in the village of ballaghaderreen, County Mayo at the time but county Roscommon after 1898.  I've been advised that this village is in two parishes Kilcolman and Castlemore.  As I mentioned in a previous post I found (on FamilySearch.org.  The birth of a Bernard McGuire to James McGuire and Ellen McNeil in Kiltrustan Roscommon in 1846 (Although I cannot confirm that this is my Bernard McGuire and his parents.  Perhaps you can confirm.

Again thank you for your help and best wishes.

  • Greetings and best wishes Eire2Go  Yes it is very frustrating researching McGuire ancestry.  Too bad for such an illustrious Irish family - the Princes of Fermanagh.  I've had no problem with the French side of my family  (Ledoux and St Louis).  In FACT i'VE GONE BACK TO cHARLEMAGNE (A DIRECT ANCESTOR OF MINE) AND FURTHER.  I've had some success with the McVay and Irish Campbell's - if these are in your tree let me know.  I subscribe to My heritage.com and have over 1800 names in my line  If you have some names for me to check there, I'll be glad to do so   The only Bernard McGuire-Jane corcoran I've found had a son Thomas born 1874 in Ballaghaderreen now county Roscommon. I've been advised that this village is in two parishes - Kilcoman and Castlemore.  ELLISISLAND.ORG KEPT VOLUMES Of records for immigrants who came to the U.S. through New York.  I also have access to Boston Port of Entry records.  These have not been of help with regard to my mcguire's.  Although my elderly Aunt Lillian (age 95) insisted Jane McGuire and son John Joseph (my grandfather) came to the U.S. aboard a cattle-boat Perhaps the reason for the difficulty I'm having tracing their arrival to the U.S.Boer War records are kept in Great Britain.    I'll be in touch again.   Your name please?
