My 4th Great Grandfather, Moses Swinney, is said to have been born in Co. Cork in the year 1713. Some of the family seem to think that he was a blacksmith by trade and a farmer as well. Some of the family also think that his fathers name was John but no one is sure. He married Miss Ann Seymore, who was also of County Cork, and born about 1725. It is believed that her fathers name was James Seymore. Its not kinown when they came to America or why. Apparently there wre many Moses Swinney's about the same time here so information is sketchy at best. We do know that he came to America with two brothers. In the early or middle of the eighteenth century three Swinney brothers came from County Cork, Ireland, and settled on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. About 1800, one brother, whose name is forgotten, being dissatisfied, he returned to his native land. The brother, Moses, settled in Lowden Co., Virginia, and the other brother, James Sr., settled in Monroe County, Virginia. Moses Swinney's people are thought to be scattered through several states, and several before mentioned are thought to be descendants from this branch, and it is a disappointment not be able to find a connecting link thus far. Moses died 20 June 1785 and was a war veteran. His wife, my 4th Great Grandmother, died also in 1785. Some say she died of a broken heart at the loss of her love, Moses. If there is anything that you can add I would love to know more about my Irish roots. I have a lot of information from this side of the clan but none from Ireland. Thank You, Rev. Richard E. Swinney II

Hi Richard,
Thanks very much for your message. I hope that someone recognises the name and makes a connection with you to help you further your research.
Unfortunately, given the early dates you mention it may be difficult to find more information as the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Furthermore, it can be very difficult without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.
There are some places you could try searching online, however these websites do not have complete collections:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only some parts of Cork have been covered.
You should also bear in mind that the name may have changed over time. Here are some variations of the name Swinney:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=
The variation Swiney, was quite popular in Cork in the 19th century. Here are the Swiney?s that were recorded in the land record known as the TIthe Applotment Books (1823-38) in Co. Cork:
The later Griffith?s Valuation (1848-64) also recorded some Swiney?s:
Here are the Swiney?s recorded in Cork, in the 1700?s in the above mentioned Irish Genealogy website:
