I am searching for records for my Great Grandparents who were from Cork. I have found my Grandmothers birth registration but cannot decifier the name of the town or parish under Father and Mothers names. Hanorah McCarthy born 11 July 1873, Father Charles McCarthy Mother Mary Tobin. Name of Registra was Daniel Donovan. I had believed that came from Bantry. Charles and Mary came to the US and were never heard from again.

Dear Brendan,
thank you for the valuable info. I did find the sister but I found a death record a year later. I know that their were family but I have lost the name. I have had no luck in finding the McCarthy's in the states.
Thank you

Hi Ellen,
Are you certain that Charles and Mary emigrated?

Hi Brendan, I am not completely sure that they emigrated. This was the family story. Hanorah was an only child and that her parents Charles and Mary emigrated to America to go out West. She followed a year later by herself and could not find them and they were not heard from again. I never met my Grandmother died before I was born and this was a story told to me by my Aunt. I have found in my research most of the facts were not true. I only found out the names from their Death Certificate and Marriage Cert. Date of Birth was wrong and place of birth was not Bantry Bay. In my research I have not found Charles and Mary. In US but such little info.. Their were cousins on the Tobin side I think but contact was lost over the years. Thanks again

Hi Ellen,
My mother is a McCarthy, she was born in 1921, she is still alive, she had an uncle Charles McCarthy.
You have to be very careful with the McCarthys, the only way to locate the correct family is to follow the paper trail, in your case Mary Tobin married Charles McCarthy in Bantry 1869, you can order the marriage record online.

What did you mean you have to be careful with the McCarthy's? Did you mean that so many of them have the same or similar names you can get confused and follow the wrong one?
I am working on a Margaret McCarthy but she is from "Hickey". I can find no town of Hickey in Cork as the family says she is from but two "Balleyhickey's" one near Tipperary that could be her home town. I can't follow a paper trail yet as I have not found any siblings or parents names. She appears to be in the United States alone in the 1850's. I am going to the local Genealogy Soc in St Paul, MN soon to do more work and try to find more family in the Catholic Church records on microfilm there. Hopefully I will find more even though she died in childbirth.
P.S. If you know about the tradition: IF her family followed the Irish naming traditions, and her name was Margaret, her first born son was Michael, and her daughter was Katherine...what might her parents names be?
-
Hello Kathleen,
Who did Margaret marry in MN? What year approx was she born, what year did she die?

Margaret McCarthy born 1830 in Ireland. Don't know when she emmigrated. She was from Hickey.
She died 11 Apr 1863 in Washington County, Minnesota, United States.
She married Christian John Abresch (a Prussian) died 1928. I think they probably married in St Paul's Cathedral, St Paul, MN in about 1857, a year before first child's birth. She was buried with last rights out of the cathedral and buried in the cathedral's old cemetery. He remarried two more times after her death.
Without knowing any siblings or parents names yet I haven't been able to get much farther. Maybe there is hope in Hickey records of the time. Then I could find American records that would verify family names here too.
-
Checked my records... 1st born son was not Michael, it was William Cornelius, and 1st daughter was correct as Katherine. Sorry.

Hi Kathleen,
I have had a good look at your Margaret, it looks like she died in childbirth, it is a long way from Cork to St. Paul, a long way for a girl to travel on her own, there were jobs in Boston and New York. Why travel on to St. Paul. I believe she travelled with her husband Dennis, they turn up in the 1857 MN census together. Hickey is a Cork surname, I believe Margaret Hickey married Dennis McCarthy in probably Ireland, Dennis died and Margaret remarried the Prussian. I cannot find Dennis in the 1860 census in MN.
If you play around with Castle Garden records, you may find the two together on the same ship, same date.

Thank you. I have seen this Dennis McCarthy and wondered if there was a connection. Without much more about Margaret I just kept that as a possibility.
A "Mary Carty" also shows up in the 1857 MN Census living only a "couple of blocks" away from where Margaret & Christian Abresch live less than a year later. This Mary Carty is living with the Antoinsson family in Oakdale as a servant girl. The age is a bit younger than I would like but the location she is living is such a strong connection I have to also consider that.
So that leaves me with Margaret & Dennis or Mary Carty, or maybe a Margaret McCarthy in the city of St Paul which is in Ramsey county next door until she possibly met Christian Abresch at church and married him. 3 choices.
Very much appreciate your help. Margaret is deeply ingrained in our family and very proudly remembered as our Irish heritage. Will keep working on it. Someday I will make the connection to Hickey for her.
-
Hi Kathleen,
Margaret's marriage record may give a clue, in Catholic marriages you need your baptism record to prove you were a baptised Catholic. When she married, the church in St. Paul then sent details of the marriage to the PP of the parish in Ireland. This church system was supposed to stop bigamous marriages.

Oh, I did not know that. Very helpful.
-
Hi Brendan,
i did order that marriage certificate and the one that shows Charles McCarthy married in Bantry but they didn't marry each other wrong Mary she marry someone else and Charles married another lady. Since they had children registered in Drinoleauge what church would they have her baptisted in. I know it's Cork & Ross but what church?
Thanks is see you use Ancestry.

Hi Ellen,
I went for that record because of your Aunt's reference to Bantry, I will have another look, I believe that Charles father was either Charles or Jeremiah.
