I'm searching for information regarding Hanna Lynch (1878-1936), parents Daniel Lynch and Julia Murphy.

Hanna's brothers are Humphrey Lynch (1858-1916) and Jeremiah "Jerry" Lynch (1862-1923).

Hanna and her brothers Humphrey and Jeremiah settled in Wilmington, DE, U.S.

According to marriage and death records they came from Cork.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,  Kim.

  • Hi Kim,

Do you have any idea about what part of County Cork they were from? Cork is a very large county with many, many parishes. So the first thing you will need to do, is to try to narrow down the place of origin from County Cork to a parish in Cork.

There are some documents you could try checking to help narrow this down. When you do find out where in Cork they were from, then I can recommend some church records for you.

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Many of these are records particular to Cork.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city James arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

You could try checking local newspaper obituaries for possible clues about their place of origin. They may point to a more specific place in Cork.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Kim,

My Lynch ancestors also settled in Wilmington, DE, around 1876. They came from Ballyvourney Parish in northwest County Cork. I haven't found any Humphrey, Hanna or Jeremiah in our family, but when I searched Griffith's Valuation for the local area, I found Humphrey and Jeremiah. Also, in the Wilmington church records and the 1880 Delaware Census, I found a Humphrey married to Catherine. They were listed also as witnesses to my family baptisms and wedding. Thought this might help you.

  • Hi Nancy,

Thanks for the information.  Hanna Lynch arrived in Wilmington around 1896 and married James Cummings(Co. Clare).  Humphrey Lynch arrived about 1885 and married Bridget Gilligan.  Jeremiah Lynch arrived about 1889 and married Catherine Creegan Flynn.  Margaret Lynch (single) may also be their sister.  They are all buried at Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington.  Our Lynches may be cousins.  What church records have you been able to access?  Are they online?  I live quite a distance from Delaware.

  • We have very little to go on from my husband's DANIEL LYNCH family from Cork.   I saw that there was mention of a Daniel Lynch in Kim's post.  I wonder if 'my' Daniel Lynch ( DOB 1864 or 1865)  could be the son of the Daniel she mentioned and brother to Humphrey, Hanna, or Jerry?  The birth dates suggest it is possible.

Here is what we have Daniel J. Lynch from county Cork born 1864 or 1865. He immigrated intially to New York, New York USA and then moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We have a business card that shows he worked as an independent electrical contractor in Philadelphia area (the card indicates that he was formerly with E.F. Caldwell &Co, New York).  We don't know anything more about his connections to Ireland but would appreciate direction. We will start with Sinead's suggestion of Ellisland.org

    Any other information is appreciated.

  • I have been trying to locate info on my great grandparents Richard Nagle married Abina aka Abbey O'Connor (Connors)  They were married November 4, 1882 at St Mary and Anne Cathedral in County Cork.   The witnesses to their marriage are listed as Humphrey Lynch and Mary Houlihan.  I stumbled across this site and not sure if the witnesses are relatives or provided a service for the church.  Any information would be greatly appreciated. My great grandparent left Ireland almost immediately after the marriage and settled in MA.
