Thank you to the volunteers here!

My great-grandfather was Edward Magner, born ABT 1856 (extrapolated from 1911 census) and died in 1938.  He was a physician with a practice and other property on South Mall in Cork as well as property at Blackrock, and he was also busy in various roles in Cork politics and governance.  He married Mary Anne Sullivan in Dublin in 1885 and they had ten children.

I have pretty good information about Edward and some of the lines following him that I am happy to share.  However my research is more speculative in generations before him.  I think his parents may have been farmer William Magner (died 1881) and Catharine Murphy with about ten children including several doctors, and I'm pretty much guessing that William's parents were Edmund Magner (born ABT 1785) and Elizabeth ?.

Edward's son, my grandfather William Owen, married Una O'Sullivan, a daughter of Robert Henry Cornelius O'Sullivan and Anne Cosgrave, in 1921.  Again, I have pretty good information about Robert (born ABT 1865 per 1911 census) who was a merchant and draper in Cork.  I think his parents were Patrick Cornelius and Ellen ?, but this earlier information too is less-certain.

Could anyone who has more-solid information on these families before the mid-1800s share information or research tips?

What parishes were they in?

Thank you for any assistance.

  • M. Magner:

I would go to www.irishgenealogy.ie  I found the January 24th 1856 baptismal record. His name was shown as Edmond. The record was in the Cork South parish which is St. Finbars on Dunbar Street. Records for that parish go back to the late 1700s.

Possibly you can find Williams baptismal record and records for the O'Sullivans.

  • Thank you Mr. McDonnell for your help.  I have registered in St. Fin Barre's Parish here and look forward to further communication with that group.

I had previously found the baptisimal record for Edmond at irishgenealogy.ie, thanks.  My great-grandfather is called Edward in both family lore and in numerous authoritative references to his life.  Is it plausible that the baptisimal record is incorrect about his first name?

I ask because although uncertain about Edward's parents as indicated in my previous message, some of William Magner's and Catharine Murphy's other children's names fit family lore including brothers Thomas and James who were also doctors like my great-grandfather, and a sister Bridget.

Maybe more communication with St. Finbars members will help.  The church does seem conveniently located to South Mall, thank you again for suggesting it.

  • M. Magner:

I have seen other situations where Edward and Edmond/Edmund were interchanged. It also could be a transcription error. This summer the National Library plans to place the RC parish registers online for free searching. I would look up the baptismal record at that time and see what it says.
