My 2nd Great Grandfather James William Manning was born 7 March 1861 somewhere in Cork.

He arrived in the US in 1878 and married Letitia Watson (of Offaly) in 1886. He lived in Sonoma, Oakland and then San Francisco until his death in 1927. James and Letitia had six children, 3 survived to adulthood- Watson (1887-1896), Joseph (1889-1889), John Wilfred (1893-1941), Thomas (1893-1894), Letitia (1894-1976) and Myrtle (1896-1981).

James claimed to have no family here, though right after arrival he lived next door (in a very rural area)  to a John Manning, whom I suspect is related. None of his documentation here contains parents names - this includes marriage, naturalization, death, obituary.

I know this is a needle in a haystack, but I'm an optomist!

  • Hi Kirsten,

Dates on documents can be out by several years on occassion...and can be very confusing. There is a James W. Manning listed for the California 1910 census  which gives his date of immigration as 1880. You can view it here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MVG3-Y7S There is also a link on the page which allows you to view information for Charles Watson (Letitia's father) who appears to have been living with the family (which you may have already known...if this is in fact the right Manning family!).

Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, Castle Garden, Ellis Island etc... ), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. Possible sites to search for information would be: http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/    http://www.castlegarden.org/   http://www.ellisisland.org/

A point of origin i.e. a placename of some kind would be vital in identifying which area in Cork you should be looking at in other databases such as Griffiths Valuation:  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch and civil and church related resources.

Information from one genealogical database for Co Cork is available for a fee at http://corknortheast.rootsireland.ie/ . Other Cork based sites that may offer some information or clues are: http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/genealogy/    http://www.from-ireland.net/county/cork  and http://www.corkarchives.ie/genealogy/sourcesinthearchives/ .

I wish you the best of luck in your search.
