I have found my McDonnell/McDonald family living in Cork City Blarney Street in 1911 census

In 1901 census they were at Spike Island as my Great Granddad Richard McDonnell was in the Army for I think around 25 years.

Richard McDonnell was born in 1864 I believe born Cork

Richard Married Ellen Wilson c1865

They married ss Peter and Paul Cork City in 1887

witnesses were John McNamara Elizabeth Barry and M Wilson

They were Catholic

St Mary Shandon parish
Ellen Wilson living 3 Bridewell Lane Cork father David or Daniel 

they had children 

Richard Christopher 1890

Mary Ann c1892

Ellie Margaretta 1894

Catherine 1896

Maria Kathleen/Kathrin 1900

William Joseph 1902

Bridget Alice 1904

all born Cork apart from

Mary Ann born Portsea

Ellie M Portsea

Catherine Portsea

William 1902 was my Grandad but I didn't know him as think he died in an accident before I was born or before my living memory.

Some of this family if not all moved to North East England where William married my Nan Edith Dobson .

Would love to find out more as never met any or spoke to any of my Irish relatives be great to contact decendants of my Mams cousins or just find out a bit more info going back and what happened to all my Great Grandads and Grandads siblings.

I have St Mary's Shandon Parish is this correct as I can't find it in Parishes Cork on this site.

  • Hi Roger thank you I did in the end think I was correct and maybe this site dosn't have the Parish of St Mary's Shandon set up as yet.

    See you are a McDonnell shame you are not one of mine?

    Whats the difference between a Civil Parish and a  ecclesiastical parish. Is that why its not on this site as a Parish? Why I can't find it under Parishes?

    My grandfather Patrick McDonnell came from the Mayo village of Carracastle near the Roscommon border.

    Brian Mitchell's book A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland describes a civil parish " From the 17th century the so-called civil parish, based on the early Christian and monastic and church settlements, was used extensively in various surveys. By the mid-19th century, the pattern of civil parishes was well established".  The ecclesiastical parishes are usually but not always a different area than civil parishes.

    Not sure why the HQ team did not show St. Marys Shandon as a parish with a page. I do know the civil parish that my grandmother emigrated from in Co. Down does not have a page so I joined the nearest parish.
