Hi,

I'm looking for any information on a Noonan family who lived in County Cork before coming to the USA in 1849, arriving at New York City on July 28 aboard the SS Atlas. The family consisted of parents Patrick (listed as age 50 on the ship manifest) and Judy/Julia (35), with their children Owen (17), Patrick (15), Bridget (13), Robert (11), Ann (9, a great-great-grandmother of mine), and Catherine (6). Another daughter was Mary, who must've come over separately. The family had settled in East Bloomfield Township, Ontario County, New York, by 1853 or so, and most of the family moved to Marshall, Michigan, around 1863 (preceded by daughter Ann, who with her husband, William Slout, and their newborn son, William, had moved to Marshall by 1860; and without son Patrick, who remained in East Bloomfield). The elder Patrick was recorded as a farmer in the 1855 NY census and as a day laborer in the 1860 US census, dying in Jan. 1865 in Michigan. Julia Noonan died in 1884 in Marshall, Michigan.

Thanks,
Tod

  • Hello Tod, do you have a death record for Patrick who died in 1865 - this might show his parents names in Ireland and it would be helpful in tracing his location in County Cork.
www.nationalarchives.ie has some entries for Patrick Noonan in Tithe Applotment records in County Cork but unless you know of his place of origin here they will not be useful for you.www.rootsireland.ie (a Pay to view site) has Baptism & marriage records for Cork North & East.
www.irishgenealogy.ie is a Free site for Baptism & Marriage records for Diocese of Cork & Ross which covers West County Cork & some Cork City Parishes.

  • Thanks, Frances,

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Michigan recorded death certificates until 1867,

two years after Patrick Sr. died, but I'll keep looking. Thanks for the other links!
