Hello. I am searching the surname Guinan. My GG Grandfather arrived in Ulster New York sometime between 1849-1852. He is John Guinan born approximately 1823. I have family notes saying he is from Co Cork ireland, but I do not have the specific parish. I know he was Catholic, and I have found the first appearance in New York on a copy of record from St. Mary's in Kingston NY which states his marriage to Hanora Dolan on Nov 11, 1852 by the Rev John Madden who was a RC priest also from Ireland. I did not find him on the 1850 census. His occupation was stonecutter. It is family lore that he came because of the potato famine with 3 brothers. I do not know their names, but possibly could be Michael and Daniel.  He died sometime in 1886 in Kingston New York. I have found his headstone, but no other information. I would like to someday pinpoint his origins as I have been searchcing for many years.

  • Hello Kelley,

If you go to the irishfamilyhistoryfoundation you will find parish records and passenger lists there.  It is free to join and you only pay to view a record.

I typed in John Guinan b 1823 but got 27 hits for ireland.  jSo if we could find the passenger list maybe it might give more indormation of where he was from.

I typed in John Guinan 1848 and clicked on the passenger list.  There was one hit between 1848-1850.  I then removed john's name and put in MIchael.  Same record.  I couldn;t find a daniel.

However I feel it would be worth your while to view this record and see what you can glean from it.  It would only cost about €5 to view.

If you decide to view it please let me know how you get on and we'll see where we can go from there.

Hope that helps in some way,

    King regards,

    Anne K Dennehy

  • Well here is the record. It really doesn't say which parish.  I will keep searching. Perhaps I can find the manifest.

  • Hello all.

I may have to research County Offaly as well. Based on the witnesses to John Guinan's marriage to Honor Dolan, one of the witnesses was Mary Cusack. I am going on the assumption that the witnesses to their marriage were probably friends or relatives. I found a baptismal record for a Margaretam Cusack May 31, 1844 which says her father was Michaelis Cusack and mother was Elizabeth Guinan.   The parish was Gallen and Reynagh, of County Offaly. diocese Ardagh and Clonmacnois.  I would like to investigate this further just to see if Elizabeth Guinan could be related somehow to John Guinan and perhaps my John Guinan was not from Cork. Just a possibility, but I like to check out all leads. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks
