Hello, I'm trying to find more information about my second great-grandfather, Timothy Kane. He was born 20 May 1837 in County Cork to John and Catharine, and he emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in June 1852, eventually settling in Holliston, Massachusetts. He married Catherine Hayes in 1858 and together they had 7 children over 14 years. Timothy died in an accident in 1893 and is buried in Franklin, Massachusetts in the family plot. I have been unable to determine where in County Cork Timothy was born and whether he had any siblings. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

John:
I searched on two sites: the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross and the subscription site Roots Ireland which has records for the Diocese of Cloyne.
So far I have only found one lead- Timy Cain baptized July 10 1836 in Caheragh RC parish parents John Cain and Catherine Murphy. Joseph Cain and Ellen Murphy were the sponsors.
The family lived in Rearahinagh townland in Caheragh civil parish.
I know the date of baptism does not match your information.
I will continue to look for other records.

John:
I found one baptismal record for a John?? Cain on February 28 1839 with parents John Cain and Catherine Murphy. I did not find the marriage record for John and Catherine. Note the parish register was not very legible regarding the first name of the child. It appears to be John. Sponsors were Pat Murphy and Ellen Murphy.
Caheragh parish is in southwest Co. Cork.
We need a lot more evidence to confirm this is the correct family.
Have you considered DNA testing?

Hi Roger: Thanks for the quick response. A couple of things are quite interesting about what you've found. I've seen Timothy's last name spelled numerous ways, including Cain on his US naturalization application. The other item is the maiden name of his mother Catharine. The first record that I can find of Timothy in the US is in the Massachusetts state census for 1855. Listed as 17 years old, he was living in the town of Holliston, Massachusetts in the home of Daniel and Ellen Murphy (both 24 years of age). Given the similarities in age, I'm thinking that Daniel and Timothy might have been cousins. I agree with your assessment that the evidence of a familial link is weak, and I have in the past done DNA testing (including Y-DNA). So far no real luck identifying any matches with the Kane surname.

John,
I am in the same boat with Timothy Kane dob 20 May 1837 and buried in Franklin. He was a paternal great-grandfather. I would appreciate learning if you have made progress since July. I hope to visit County Cork in February (rain or shine) and it would be great to narrow the seach by then. On one website (that I haven't been able to revisit) a Beverly Kane has a tree with lots of detail overlapping our interest, but so far she has not replied ti my inquiry about Timothy.

Hi Geoff, I can't say that I've made much progress in tracing Timothy Kane back to Ireland. One of the bigger issues is that I can't be certain of Timothy's mother's maiden name. I'm guessing that it may have been Murphy, given that Timothy lived with a Murphy family when he first arrived in Massachusetts in the 1850s (Daniel and Ellen Murphy). Also, Timothy and his wife Catherine (Hayes) are listed in the 1860 US Census for Holliston, MA as sharing the same dwelling number as Philip and Susan Murphy. I was able to confirm the existence of a baptismal record for a Timy Cain from July 1835 that took place in the Roman Catholic parish of Caheragh in the diocese of Cork & Ross. His parents, John Cain and Catherine Murphy, were living in Rerahinagh at the time of his birth. The sponsers were Joseph Murphy and Ellen Cain. John and Catherine appear to have had another child (Jos?) in 1839. He was also baptised in Caheragh, and the sponsers were Patrick and Ellen Murphy. There is a record of the marriage of a John Keane and Catherine Murphy from 28 February 1835 in the parish of Drimoleague & Drinagh in the diocese of Cork & Ross. At the time of the marriage, John Keane was living in Cahara and Catherine Murphy's home parish may have been Drimoleauge. Both John and Catherine were listed as servants, and the marriage was witnessed by Michl. Murphy and Timy. Keane. County Cork is certainly the ancestral home for the Keane/Cain/Kane family, but there are still a lot of gaps left to fill before any of Timothy's past in Ireland can be confirmed. I've not had much success using DNA to uncover any additional Kane leads to this point. I haven't found much information about Mary Sweeney, the spouse of Timothy E Kane (and I'm guessing your grandmother). Her death certifcate indicated she was born in Charlestown, MA to John Sweeney and Mary McHugh (McHue?) but that trail also goes cold quickly. I wish I had more information to share. Have a great trip to Ireland. It's been a couple of years since I was last there, but I haven't yet made it to the areas where the Kane family may have lived. I see that you have come across my mother Beverly's family tree; I also have a family tree on Ancestry.com that is pubically viewable. Let me know if I can be of further help.
