  • Hi there,

Do you have any idea of an exact location in Cork city? Cork is a big area with lots  of parishes. There is a parish specifically for Cork city called St. Finbar's.  But as I said, the city is spead over a wide area and I suspect this just covers the city centre.

As a diocese (Roman Catholic), Cork city is divided into 5 areas: Blackrock, St. Peter and Paul's, St. Finbarr's (South), St. Mary's, and St. Patrick's. The church records start dates vary a lot, so it is important to know precisely where you need to look. I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase! The National Library of Ireland will have information on all areas. The call numbers are: Pos.4791, 4785, 4778-4783, 4874-4875, and 4788.

Do you have any information on their emigration, dates, name of ship, port of arrival etc.? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. You might find information about his parents here. Failte Romhat also has a strong Cork focus that may be of interest to you.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • If only I had more information - but you have given me several routes to try.  I have not found an entry place nor  naturalization papers (which the census report states he had).  I'll keep looking!!!  Thanks for your help.  Cait

  • I just came upon this today and am dismayed I never replied when I found more information. I have searched for the place of birth for my ggf who supposedly was born in Cork City, Co Cork, but...I have not found siblings, Cornelius, Daniel and Ellen whose parents were Daniel and Catherine (Kelley?).  Still looking!!  But here is the information I now have.

Cornelius Warren, b. about 1835 and his siblings, Daniel, b. 1845 and Ellen, b. 1846, all born in Ireland, each list their parents on records in the USA as Daniel and Catherine

Cornelius, my ggf, was married to Ann Falan/Fallon in Roxbury, MA in 1860 with sponsors named Roger Warren and May Graham.  Cornelius died in Peaabody, MA on Aug 5, 1882.

Daneil married Alice McRoe in Jan. 1869 and after her death married Elizabeth Healy in 1878.  He listed in the 1900 and 1910 census returns that he was naturalized and arrived in America in 1853 and then in 1910 listed his arrival  in 1851.  He died in Boston on Apr. 26. 191 and his parents were listed as Daniel and Catherine Kelley..

Ellen married John Callahan in Malden, MA on Feb. 5, 1871 and died in Malden. MA on Oct. 6, 1881.

Cornelius and his wife had 3 children -

Elizabeth Ann b. Roxbury, MA in 1861 who was my grandmother, married to Joseph M. Kerans/Kearns in 1880. Sponsors at their wedding were Patrick Henry Warren and Margarita Crowe. Elizabeth died in 1917 leaving 11 children.  Her husband had died 3 years earlier.  My mother, Ruth, was next to the yourngest being born in 1903.

Patrick Henry (birth record states Male Warren) in North Brookfield in 1863. He went by Henry P. for some reason and was married 3 times.  He died in 1933 and his death record lists his parents as Cornelius Warren and Ann Graham.

Katie (Catherine) born in Malden, MA in 1864.  On Katie's birth record, it states her parents were Cornelius b. Cork City Co Cork and Ann Farland b. in Galway, Ireland.  In the 1870 and 1880 census returns she is listed as the daughter of Cornelius and Ann Warren, yet at her marriage to Walter Pray in Ipswich, MA on Oct. 24, 1894, her parents are listed as George Warren and Ann Farland. Both her parents were dead at the time.  Katie's death record in Peabody, MA on Jan 5, 1908, her parents once again are listed as George Warren and Ann Elizabeth Farland. Three years later, her husband died and their daughter went to live with my grandparents - her aunt, Elizabeth (b. 1861) and Joseph M. Kerans/ Kearns in Danvers.
