~~Hi, Grace Fox,
Following up your message posted on 28 May 2013
I wonder if Ann McAuliffe, whom you mentioned previously, has been able to find any of the descendants of Patrick and Kate (McCarthy) Barry who were the above Patrick David (McCarthy) and Garrett Barry's parents. Patrick is buried in Midleton. Garrett is my great grandfather who went to Queensland Australia.

  • Hi Kevin,

    Thanks for your interest.

Below is much of what we know about our gx2 grandfather Patrick Barry b.ca1803 and family.

~BARRY/McCARTHY - MIDLETON, CORK  Patrick Barry b.1803, was my gx2 grandfather, a shoemaker, living and working at ?34 Main St Midleton in the 1840s and 1850s. My 2xgreat grandmother was Catherine (Kate) McCarthy b.1818 of Churchtown, Cloyne, parents - John McCarthy & Elizabeth Barry. Kate at age 15 married Patrick Barry b.1803 of Midleton in 1833 in Churchtown, Cloyne Parish. Kate's parents were John McCarthy & Elizabeth Barry. Kate had older sister Johanna b.1808 (living with Kate at ?34 Main St in 1841 parish census), brothers David b.1810 and Garrett b. 1812.

Kate & Patrick had nine sons and three daughters - Garrett b.1854, the sixth son, was my g/grandfather He was a telegraphist and migrated to Australia in 1870s. An older brother was Patrick David Barry aka Patrick McCarthy Barry, b.1852 d.1925, aged 73, buried Holy Rosary Church, had continued to operate his father's shoemaker's shop at 34 Main St. He married a Johannah (?McCarthy)who died 1908 aged 57. He then married a May Esther ? who on his death married a Thomas Geaney. May Geaney ran the shoemaking business until her death in 1965 when the business was inherited by her niece who lived in Cork City.

Although there were seven sons and three daughters I have never been able to contact any descendants of Kate McCarthy and Patrick Barry. The children were: Mary Ann b.1833; Richard 1835; William 1839; Elizabeth 1842; John 1844; Patrick 1846 Catherine 1849 Patrick David 1852 Garrett 1854 Justin Robert 1856 James Joseph 1859 Robert Henry 1862

The Manuscript Index of Marriages of Cloyne Parish (copy provided by Bertie Troy) indicates that John McCarthy and Elizabeth Barry of Chtn (Churchtown?) had following children Elizabeth (p.34), Jas (p.65), Johanna (p.95- 1808 above), David (p.129 - 1810; sponsors Timothy McCarthy and Catherine McCarthy), Garrett (p?, 1812, sponsors David Lane & Elizabeth Brennan) Catherine (p.247 - 1818), John (p.267), Robert (p.344).

From christening  records provided by Mallow HC,  Marian, Garrett, Richard and John Barry acted as sponsors of some of Parick's and Kate's children - therefore, possible siblings of Patrick?

We don't know where Patrick was born or when and where he died.

    Many thanks,

    Donald Barry,

    Brisbane, Australia.
