Hi
I would be so greatful to anyone who can help me on my search for my Irish relatives. James Quinn was my Irish great great grandfather, he emmigrated as an "assisted Immigrant" to NSW Australia on the "Ida", arriving in Sydney on 18 January 1864. Any paperwork I've found in Australia states he is from from "near Michelstown" - I have found two James Quinn's around this time and in the area via the Griffiths Valuation - one listed in Mulberry Lane along with a Thomas and a John Quinn and another listed as in Glenduff. I have been unable to find anything at all further with regard to the names his parents and I have not been able to find a death certificate for him in Australia. James appears to have been illiterate or at least was unable to read and write in English - "his mark" X is made on all documentation we have found to date. His occupation is either "farmer" or "labourer". Any assistance with regard to my Irish ancestors or any Quinn's hailing from around the Mitchelstown area would be so very gratefully received.
Kind regards
Nadine Quinn

Hi Nadine
The record of his arrival has his age as 19 so probably born 1844.
Here are 3 Mitchelstown baptism records from www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site) but none is exactly 1844:
Only 1 record has the family address - Skeheen
There are no Quinns in the 1841 Irish Census (available free at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
There are 43 Quinns in Cork in the Tithe Applotments in the 1820's & 30's but Mitchelstown isn't mentioned.
I should have started the search on ancestry as the saye noonan 2014 public member tree (owner hinoo) has him:
Birth:1842 Kilbeheny, Limerick, Ireland registered Mitchelstown, Cork, Ireland 1 Source
Marriage to Unknown 1863 Age: 21 Maitland, New South Wales Not confirmed yet
Arrival 1864 18 Jan Age: 22 Either marriage or arrival wrong!
The birth record agrees with the 1839 above so we could be on the money here.
The Hayler Kelly Bowe and Gree tree has the same with this:

This is unbelievable!!! How did you DO that so quickly! I kid you not I have been trawling through Ancestory and TROVE and the Irish records for months trying to pin point my James Quinn and here you turn up more information than i could have ever dreamed in no time at all! I do hope you understand I did try and I wasn't just being lazy about it! I really felt like I was at a total dead end and now OH MY GOODNESS YOU FOUND HIM!! and on Australian Ancestry.com.au too! I must say I'm a cross between a little embarrassed by my ineptitude and absolutely totally thrilled! Oh thank you thank you thank you! I will contact Saye Noonan via Ancestory.com.au as it appears there is information I can provide that they don't have including the information about his first wife Mary Dixon which I have to admit she was a really difficult lady to track down and her family is appearing a bit of a difficulty also as I haven't been able to locate any birth record for hear and only "Near Clarence Town" is listed on the marriage and death cert. Oh but thank you so much for this! Thank you!
