My 2nd great grandfather Timothy Burns and his brother Daniel came to the US before 1850 and settled in Stoughton, Massachusetts for a few year before moving to Le Sueur County, Minnesota. Timothy's place of origin was given on his gravestone.
On Timothy's marriage record in MA, his parents were given and Patrick and Ellen (maiden name unknown). Naming patterns for the 2 families bear this out as well. Names the 2 families had in common were Patrick, Ellen, Daniel, Timothy, and Mary Jane.
Daniel was born about 1830 and Timothy about 11827--just missing the baptismal records.
I noticed in the Ballinamona church records that there are a lot of Sweeneys. The witnesses to Timothy's marriage to Eliza Barry were Patrick Sweeney and Ellen Sweeney. I have not been able to clearly identify them in US records, nor do I know if they were from Mourneabbey.
Griffiths does have a few Burns/Byrnes in the record, so I believe the place of origin is correct or close. There are some Burnses in the record from Grenagh, but at least the family of Patrick Burns and Julia Lane has been eliminated.
Any insights would be welcome.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
As you likely know the RC records for Grenagh/Ballinamona do not start until 1840 which means the baptismal records are not available for Daniel and Timothy. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0058
The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Mourneabbey civil parish did show four Burns/Byrne records in Kilquane. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/mourneabbey.htm
By 1901, Kilquane did not have any Burns/Byrne records in the census.
You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

my great great grandfather, Patrick Sweeney married Ellen Louney. They had a son Robert who is my great grandfather born in Mourneabbey 30 Aug 1843, and a daughter Johanna born 28 Nov 1846. They settled in Massachusetts. I noticed you had similar names in your post. I would like to be able to discuss with you.

Mkbiddy - Can I ask where you managed to find the Ballinamona Church Records? I know from his obituary that my grandfather is buried in Ballinamona cemetery but I haven’t been able to find his grave. Thanks. Elaine.
