Hello,
I am looking for the homestead of my Grandmother, Ellen O'Mahony. Her parents were Julia and Cornelius O'Mahony. On the 1911 Census Form N it says: County, Cork; Parish, Schull; Townland, Dunbeacon; Constabulatory District, Bantry; Sub-District, Durrus; Barony, W. Carbery. I know that after my Grandmother passed the house was abandoned and became an unofficial Coast Guard station or a place where the lobstermen would dry their equipment.
The Coughlin Family lived next door and when my mother was there in 1978, she met Connie and Nance Coughlin who lived directly next to my Grandmothers house. I believe a Cornelius and Fannie O'Donovan also lived near her house. Cousins of my Grandmother are Jack and Hanna Coughlan Healy, who's son was an opera singer with the Cork Opera Co. My Grandmother's brother is Paddy Lordan from Drimoleague. There is a family connection to Danno O'Mahony an Irish wrestler.
I will be traveling to Cork this September to find Nellie's (what we called here in USA) home. I have narrowed it down to an area but cannot find an address. It may no longer be there.
Thanking you in advance for any information anyone may have.
Warm regards,
~Alice

Hello again!
Try the library branch in Schull to see if they have some suggestions on a contact who may be familiar with Dunbeacon townland. http://www.corkcoco.ie/co/web/Cork%20County%20Council/Departments/Libra… We do not have a parish liaison in that parish.
There were 40 homes in Dunbeacon in 1911.
You may also want to try the online Irish phone book to see if you can find any connections in Dunbeacon. Make sure you use the Residential TAB.

If you are spending any time in Dublin it may also be worth searching of the revaluation records, also known as the Cancelled Land Books. These trace occupancy and immediate lessor or owner of the property forward from the primary valuation (Griffith's) though the 1901 and 1911 census, until around the time rates were abolished - about the 1970s or 80s. These books are held by the Valuation Office on Lower Abbey Street, in Dublin. They are generally books for each Electoral District with the entries in civil parish and townland sequence. Every so often, in theory about 10 years, the old book is cancelled and a new book is started so you would have to work through a sequence of books possibly working back from the census.
The same plot numbers (rural areas dont have addresses other than townland name) are often used in the Valuation books right through from Griffith's so might help locate their property of the original Griffith's Maps to compare to the households on the census, which use different enumerator references. The Valuation Office may have additional maps available..
The townland is quite large at just under 1,600 acres (1st Ed. OSI map).
Have you located the marriage for Cornelius and Julia - do you know if their families lived in Dunbeacon townland ?

Alice,
Your Cornelius Mahony & Julia (nee McCarthy) were married in Caheragh parish on 11th Feb 1882. I have her father as a Denis McCarthy. I have 11 of their 14 children born in Coolbane, Caheragh. I don't have the two that died young, according to the 1911 census, but as there was about 5 years between Matthew and Cornelius Patrick, it's reasonable to assume they were born then. You'll find them in Hse #4 in Coolbane in the 1901 census, with spouse, nine children and a Hayes lodger.
May I ask how your grandmother was a brother to Patrick Lordan, as I understand her maiden name was O'Mahony? And is the Hannah Healy (nee Coughlan) connection through her mother being a Mahony?
Regards
Jerry

Roger, thank you again. Very helpful indeed!
Shanew147, thank you very much. I look forward to my research when we get to Dublin!
Jerry, thank you also! I have not found the certificate of marraige but and happy to know the date. And as for Patrick Lordan; I was reading my mother's cousins notes (to her when my mother went there) and it actually says that Paddy Lordan is Grandma O'Mahony's brother. So not my grandmother, but their grandmother's brother. My grandmother's cousin.
I thank you all so very much. You have been so helpful. I will continue my search!
My very best to you. ~Alice
