Searching for relatives of Denis Shanahan and Margaret (Peg) Mahony, from West Schull (Goleen) parish, diocese of Ross and Cork. Their children are :

Tim baptized 16 Feb 1830

Bridgt baptized 12 Feb 1833

John baptized 14 June 1835

Pat baptized 30 Jan 1838. I am trying to verify that he is the Patrick Shanahan who married Elizabeth Meade of Crookhaven townland in the same parish in 1860 and the moved first to Wales and then to Buffalo, NY.  He was rumored to have relatives in Boston, but none in Buffalo.  It is also likely that Elizabeth Meade had a brother Patrick Meade whose family lived near them in Tredegar, Wales in 1869, but who had three children born in Buffalo, NY. in the 1860's.

  • Not sure how you got on with this one, I am also looking for a Patrick Shanahan with a father called Denis born circa 1840, Patrick married Eliza Hartnett in Cardiff in 1860, Denis was deceased at this time. i never managed to find out where in ireland the Shanahans were from, rumoured to be Waterford

  • Hi Steve,  I have a Denis Shanahan, father of Patrick in Clogane, near Ballydehob, circa 1805. Later, Patrick was in the parish in Goleen, near Shull, married in 1860 to Elizabeth Meade. Records are acanty, as you may know. Elizabeth Meade always said the last name was Shannon, as we have been known since they arrived in Buffalo around 1870, but Patricks marriage and death certificates both name him Shanahan.  Natives of the Goleen area told me there never were Shannons there.  That's a Protestant name and they were all Catholic.  They insisted the name was Shanahan. That's all I've got.
