Hello!  I'm looking for information on parents and siblings of my great-grandfather, Michael Sullivan.  He was baptised in Schull East on 14 Dec 1867, parents John Sullivan & Ellen Mahoney, with sponsers Denis O'Mahoney & Catherine McCarthy.

In searching 'irishgenealogy.ie', I can find this exact record for Michael.  I also found these other baptisms for parents John Sullivan & Ellen Mahoney, in Schull East:

Mary Ellen, 29 Dec 1873, sponsors Richard Ellis & Mary Mahony

John, 14 April 1876, sponsors John Arundel & Kate Cotter

Patrick, 11 Feb 1879, sponsors Michael Cotter & Hanna Mahony

Michael Sullivan emigrated to the US about 1887, we do not know who he came over with.  In 1898 Michael married Bridget Cotter in NY, she also born in Schull.

Michael's 1956 obituary mentions two sisters still living in Ireland:  Mrs. Anna O'Mahoney & Mrs. Catherine Skinner.  I have not been able to find any baptism, marriage or death information on these two sisters.

I did find a record in the 1901 census for Sullivans John (60), Ellen (57), Denis (26), Annie (16), Katie (15) living on Main St. in Schull.  In the 1911 census, I found John (73), Ellen (70), Annie C (23) and Katie (21)

I am interested in any information as to all the siblings listed above and his parents also.

Thank you!

  • Thank you, Col!

I neglected to mention in my first post that I had what I thought was the marriage of John Sullivan & Ellen Mahoney, but I'm not sure.  I have searched "IrishGenealogy.ie" church records, and thought they were married 23 Feb 1867, witnesses Michael & Mary Mahony.  John as listed as from "Ratoora", which I'm assuming is Ratoorgh, not sure.  That marriage took place in 'Schull West', not east.  I'm not familiar with the town, not sure what the distance / difference is between east and west locations in days of old.

I did not find any record for the date you mentioned.  I'm very much anticipating the Irish Library records coming online this summer!

Also, for the marriage of Catherine Sullivan, I don't think that is her, as I believe she was quite a bit younger than my g-grandfather, Michael.  And we are quite sure the Michael was baptised in 1867.  If I have the correct family from the census, then Catherine would have been born between 1885-1889, as she was still single, living with her parents in 1911.

Another thing I forgot to mention... in the census (if I have the correct Sullivan family), then Ellen is shown as having 7 children, 4 living.  The 4 could be Michael, Denis, Annie & Katherine, and the 3 deceased could be Mary Ellen, John & Patrick.  I just wish I knew if I had the correct family, and if there are any marriage or death records for any of them.

My biggest clue is the obituary - none of my living relatives knew that he had 2 sisters still alive in Ireland in 1956.  Finding proof of them would be great!  Perhaps there are living Skinner or Mahony grandchildren of Catherine or Annie who might know this??  I don't know how to find living people! LOL.

Thank you so very much for your response!  I truly appreciate the effort.  God bless.

  • Kaymarie,

Ratooragh would be classed as 'Schull West' parish, which is now Goleen Parish. Don't assume John was from Ratooragh, though, as often the bride's residence would be noted. You'll have seen both Mahony's and Sullivans from Ratooragh, so only a marriage cert request from the GRO would put that to bed.

There was a Katie OSullivan who married a William Skinner in Schull District on 19 Aug 1919. A speculative match could be to the William Skinner from Rathmore in Baltimore (i.e. Tullagh Parish).

Anne is proving a bit more difficult... Here's a possilbe longshot: noting Anne's middle initial of 'C', there was a Christina Sullivan who married a Timothy Mahoney in Schull District on 3 Apr 1934. If it's your Anne, she would be older than normal, but might be worth a shot. You never know, as the last sibling to marry (probably), she might have had an inheritance, which would knock 20 years off her for any man!!

As to the Bridget Cotter who married Michael in NY, I believe she was from Coosheen, born to James and Catherine Lancer, and was baptised 6 Mar 1868...

    Regards

  • Wow, it's been so long since I've researched this line.  Thank you, Jerry, for your update.

Indeed, my g-grandmother, Bridget Cotter was the daughter of James Cotter & Catherine Lancer.  We believe James was the s/o Michael Cotter & Mary Driscoll, and Michael was s/o Barnaby Cotter.  There are lots of Cotters in my neck of the woods, Buffalo NY.  I have her baptismal the same as your post, taking place in "Schull East", but was not aware of the "Coosheen" location.

I appreciate the info on the possible marriages of the Sullivan ladies.  I will search further for William Skinner, which seems to be the best lead.  Quite possible that the Skinners had children, less likely than the Mahoney's, if that is the correct marriage.

Do you know of any resources to search more recent death records?  In particular, I'd like to find either of the Sullivan ladies, under their married names, after 1956.

  • I am still hoping to find some more information on my g-grandfather's two sisters, Annie & Katie O'Sullivan of Schull.  I would especially like to find any birth, marriage or death records for the sisters, or for any of their descendants.

With the recent release of some more records, I was able to find the following:

Annie O'Sullivan of Schull married James Michael O'Mahony from White Castle in the Roman Catholic Church of Schull on 24 June, 1913.  Her father was John (presume still alive in 1913 as not noted being dead) and his father was James O'Mahony (noted as 'dead').  Witnesses were Jerome O'Mahony & Katie O'Sullivan.  It appears John O'Callaghan performed the ceremony.

Maggie Ellen O'Mahony was born to James & Annie (maiden O'Sullivan) in Schull, 17 April 1914

Anna Frances O'Mahony was born to James & Annie (maiden O'Sullivan) in Schull,  6 April 1915

I found a death record for a James Michael O'Mahony, 25 December 1938, married, 64 yrs old, in Schull, reported by son John O'Mahony.

This would mean James Michael was born about 1874, making him about 39 when he married Annie (she about 27).  It would also mean they had a son John.  As the birth records recently released are only for those older than 100 years, it seems quite possible Annie had more children after Maggie Ellen & Anna Frances.

I also found these records, I believe are about Annie's sister Katie:

William Skinner, widower, farmer, of Rathmore, Baltimore; s/o William Skinner (alive?)
married 19 August 1919 in Roman Catholic Church of Schull
Kate O'Sullivan of Schull, d/o John O'Sullivan (dead)
Witnessses Frank Rogers & Elizabeth Gregory, officiated by ?? O'Leary

That would mean my great-great grandfather, John O'Sullivan, died between the marriage of Annie in 1913 & the marriage of Kate in 1919.

    I found these death records:
John Sullivan, 7 March 1914, married, 76 yrs old, farmer of Schull, wife Ellen present at death

Ellen Sullivan, 29 September 1918, farmer's widow, 75 (?) yrs old, Katie Sullivan, daughter, present at death.

As noted in an earlier post, both Annie O'Sullivan O'Mahony & Katie O'Sullivan Skinner were both alive in September of 1956 when their brother Michael passed away in Buffalo, NY.

Is there any place I can find residency information for the 1950's thru present day?  I would love to find any descendants of the two sisters.

  • Hi SmiSul,

Your search is over. I am one of Annie O'Mahony's (ne O'Sullivan) fourteen grandchildren, eleven of whom survive. If you e-mail me, tim@horan.co.uk, I can fill in the blanks on my grandmother, your great grand aunt and her sister who married Skinner from Baltimore. You are correct in thinking that she had more than the three children you traced. I think you'd be my second cousin, once removed. Your parents would be my second cousins.
