My grandmother, Hannah Mahoney, was born in 1881 in Schull, Co. Cork.  Her father was Dennis Mahoney, or Dennis O'Mahoney.  Her mother was Ellen O'Donovan, who was married twice, both times to men with the Mahoney surname.  I believe my great-grandfather was the 2nd husband.

My grandmother emigrated, at about age 16, to America, arriving in Boston.  She came to siblings in Taunton, Massachusetts.  I believe the farm she came from was inherited by a half-brother, Dennis O'Mahoney.  I believe his daughter, Kate, and her husband, Tom Wilcox, inherited the farm.  I've heard that the Wilcox family is there, yet.

I would love to know more about my grandmother's ancestry.  She died here in the USA, when I was age 5 years old.  She never returned to Ireland, after emigrating.  Her father, Dennis, also emigrated, either before, or after, she did.  He is buried in Taunton, Massachusetts.

My great-grandmother, Ellen (O'Donovan) O'Mahoney is buried in Schull, Co. Cork.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the family may have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation).

You might try any of the following for more assistance:

    Skibbereen Heritage Centre http://www.skibbheritage.com/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
