I have been reseaching my family history from the Skibbereen and Baltimore area in southwest County Cork.  I am focused on about 25 surnames - main surnames from this area are:  Walsh, Minihane, Connolly, McCarthy, Collins, Leonard, O'Brien, Hegarty, and Sheehan.

Would like to make contact with others doing research in the Skibbereeen and Baltimore area - particularly on these surnames.

  • Hi -

Have you tried contacting info@skibbheritage.com for assistance?

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.

Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, I read your thread, and I am also related to Hegarty's from the area.  DOn't know anything about them other than the fact that Margaret Hegarty (born abt: 1841) married my 2x great grandfather Denis Scanlon (born abt: 1833).  Some of their kids were born in Tullagh.

  • My 2ggrandmother (as far as I know) was Ellen Minihane of Tullagh Parish, born about 1835 and married Cornelius O'Shea of Drishanemore. Their son,Jeremiah O'Shea was my great-grandfather. On the 1911 census there is an Andrew Minihane in the household at Drishanemore whose relationship to head is stated as 'cousin'. I have only started to look into this side of my family but will post any updates and would welcome any info from others.

  • My 2x great grandfather (Denis Scanlan) married a Margaret Hegarty.  Depending upon the document that you read, some say his kids were born in Tullagh and others say Hollyhill in Skib.  I noticed that one of the godparents for one of his kids was a John Minihane.  Not sure if it's your Minihanes.  The time frame would have been mid 1860s to late 1870s.

  • Kvstr01.     I believe the John Shea family of Drishanemore which included sons Patrick and John to be first cousins of my mother.   They are in the 1901 and 11 census with John being a widower. Would this be the he same family's?   kitsy
