My paternal grandfather was born Charles Henry Scullion (now Scully) February 11, 1883 in Bellaghy. His father Charles died March 15, 1892 in Bellaghy.  In April 1895, Charles Henry, his mother Mary Brady Scullion and his siblings except for a married sister, arrived in New York City and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA.  His sister, Jane Scullion remained in Bellgahy as she had married Hugh Fitzpatrick. I would like to talk to anyone about the Scullion, Brady, or Fitzpatrick families.

  • My father left Bellaghy, Ireland, in 1923. Married Mary Evans in Cleveland, Ohio. Raise five boy and two girls. One of the girls died at birth, my twin sister. My father died in 1991 at 91 in Euclid, Ohio His grandfather, William Charles Strathern, was born in 1828 give or take five years, in the Magherafelt area. He married Mary Kennedy and raised 11 children, He was married in Bellaghy, St Mary's RC Church 1860 after returning from India. He served in the 2nd Regiment, Bengal European Army (Fusiliers) from 1848-1857.and then seved in the local army reserve till the mid 1880s. We hav not been abl to find any documentation on his parents. He signed his military records as William Charles Strathern, but no next of kin we listed. My great aunt jenny said his father was William Charles Strathern and mother Mary O'Toole. So we are looking for documentation. Strathern is considered a Scotish name but we cannot find the connection. Mary Kennedy's parent were William Kennedy and Polly Cunningham we would like to find that connection also. My Haplogroup is R-P 310. Our DNA suggest Walkrs, Sinclare or Shannon. Any assistance anyone can provide we will be grateful.

  • My great-great grandparents are from this parish.  James Scullion, son of William Scullion & Ann Dimond, married Sarah Kearney, daughter of William Kearney & Nancy Ann Cassidy.  They married on 30 Oct 1856 at St. Mary's church, Bellaghy.  They immigrated to Montreal, Canada either that same year, or early 1857.  Sarah Kearney Scullion died in Montreal on 8 Jan 1892.  James Scullion died in Montreal on 21 Mar 1906.  They, along with many family members, are buried in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery (Concession: N 00884).  James and Sarah had 12 children, including my great-grandmother, Sarah Virginia Scullion 1868-1952.

  • My cousin Rose Laverty Scullion who lives in Ballyscullion sent me this note about Diamonds.

“A branch of the O’Donnell family were located in the town Edenreagh, Bellaghy. There was a Hugh O’Donnell (my great uncle) married an Anne Jane Diamond in 1882. Her father was an Andrew Diamond and her mother was a Briget Keanrey. My great uncle Hugh and Anne Jane and their family emigrated to New Zealand, and unfortunately all of my County Derry relatives who could have helped me out with info on the Diamonds and Kearneys are all deceased.”
