I am looking for information about my  great grandfather  James Gorman he died in Kinning  Park  in Glasgow in1902. It looks like he joined the 69th regiment of foot in Kilkenny in the 16th of August 1855 and served as a drummer until about 1883 he was discharged in Londonderry and married a Margaret Whiteside from Lisbunny  Derry after which they must have moved to Glasgow . He has listed as his next of kin a brother called Laurence serving in the 17th regiment of foot. On his enlistment papers  it shows he stayed at Patrick st in Kilkenny  his fathers name was William Gorman , in the Griffiths valuation there is a William Gorman living in a house in Patrick St Upper townland of Gardens in the parish of St Patrick the landlord is an Edmund Smithwick this was around 1848. I have found two baptism records one for a James Gorman 4th oct 1841 and one for a Laurence Gorman 7th Sept 1835 in both , father is William Gorman  mother Margaret Fogarty , i would be interested to find out as much as i can about the family for instance was there more than the two sons, what was Williams employment on the death record for James his fathers employment is shown as a spirit merchant

  • Hi -

Your mention of Margaret Whiteside of Lisbunny caught my eye. My great-grandmother, Jane "Jennie" Whiteside, had a sister named Margaret born in 1859. They were daughters of John Whiteside & Margaret Baird of Lisbunny. This Margaret married John Wallace in 1893 in Upper Cumber COI.

I believe your Margaret Whiteside who married James Gorman was the daughter of Major Whiteside and his wife Jane of Terrydreen.
