Martha Crooks Henry was my grandfather William Shaw Crooks sister.  She was born in 1891 in County Derry in or around Moneymore.  As of the 1901 census she was living in House 9 in Derrycrummy, Moneymore.  My brother visited her in 1973 when she was 82 and in a nursing home in Cookstown.  She had at least one son.  We have lost contact with the family since that time.  She was the daughter of Robert (b1853) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) (b1850) Shaw Crooks, both from Moneymore.

I am travelling to Cookstown and Moneymore in early October and am hoping to find some relatives still in the area.  Hoping I can find some help with this group. I live near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

No luck with Robert's birth or Martha's death  I'm afraid.

I couldn't find any Crooks in Derry or Tyrone in the irish phone book.

  • It would porbably be worth going to PRONI when you come to Ireland, to see if Martha left a will. If so, that may give you details of next of kin at that time. Neither the indexes (called calendars) nor the wills themselves for 1970 onwards are on-line. You either need to contact PRONI by e-mail and pay them to search for you, or you can do it free if you go in person.

  • Elwin, thank you so much for that information, especially Martha's husband and marriage. I'm wondering if there would be any Henry info from Martha's son and his family. I will check PRONI when I come over.

  • Here’s details of Adam Henry’s probate abstract in 1951. The abstract (summary) is on-line but the will is not. You have to order it up in PRONI. For Martha’s you need to search the will calendars (hardback index books) in PRONI and then when you have the date probate was granted, order the will up.

Henry Adam of Kildress Cookstown county Tyrone farmer died 14 September 1951 Probate Belfast 14 November to Martha Henry the widow. Effects £772 10s.

Note that the family were living in Kildress in 1951. Martha was the executor.
