My name is Cathie Muschany (nee McClernon).  My great great grandmother was Margaret McClernon/McLaren (nee McElwee).  She was born in 1810 and died january 3, 1867 and is buried at Keenaught Cemetery.  Her husband, Hugh McCLernon/McLaren, is not buried here.  I can't find any info on his birth/death or where he is buried.  They lived in Carncose.  Their son, Hugh married Margaret McElhone and emigrated to the US in 1870.  I had the good fortune to visit Keenaught in 2007 and saw Margaret's gravesite.  Someone had put flowers on her grave.  I would like to know more about Hugh McClernon (her husband) and who still puts flowers on her grave.  I became acquainted with Dan McClernon, also on this board in our mutual search for McClernons in Desert Martin Parish.  I believe Margaret McElwee McClernon is great great grandmother to both of us.

  • Hi Cathie

There is a burial / death record of a Hugh McClarnon 1876 in Derry on www.rootsireland.ie/

It costs to view the full record but it will have his age and the parish.

There were a lot of spelling variations with surnames in those times of illiteracy and transcription errors as well as name changes.

I couldn't find a birth or marriage record however.

  • Cathie,

If you order a copy of Margaret?s death certificate, it will tell you whether her husband was dead or alive in 1867.  What looks to be her death was registered in Magherafelt 1867 Volume 1, page 638 (as Margaret M?Lernon.).

Hugh is listed in Griffiths Valuation in plot 15 of Carncose for 1859 and remains listed till 1883 when he has been replaced by John (and then Patrick in 1888). So he porbably died some time prior to 1883.

In addition to the death Col has listed, I can see another on the Irish civil indexes site that you might want to investigate,  registered in Magherafelt, 1875 Vol 1, page 719, est year of birth 1805.

PRONI in Belfast has probate files for the following 4, who presumably are Hugh?s descendants. (They obviously weren?t big on writing wills in the family as all died intestate).

Administration of the Estate of John McLernon late of Carncose County Londonderry Farmer who died 9 May 1902 granted at Londonderry to Thomas Larkin Auctioneer.

Administration of the Estate of Patrick McLernon late of Carncose County Londonderry Farmer who died 12 March 1905 granted at Londonderry to Nancy Kelly Married Woman.

McLernon Patrick of Carncose Moneymore county Londonderry farmer died 12 March 1905 Administration Int. (d.b.n.) Londonderry 22 June to Mary Jane Marlow married woman. Unadministered effects Nil. Registered Land ?90 10s. Former Grant Administration Londonderry D.R. 2 February 1911.

Administration of the Estate of Sarah McLernon late of Carncose County Londonderry Married Woman who died 18 August 1893 granted at Londonderry to Thomas Larkin Auctioneer.
