Looking for connections and contacts for the following Surnames.  Could be some spelling variations for Buchanan, such as Buchannan, Buchanon, Buckannan, Buckhannon etc.  The families came to America around 1730, plus or minus 10 years.  Any information is greatly appreciated.

  • Hello, I have traced my Buchanan family back to 1760 David Buchanan (B1760  D1840) in 'Newtown' Limavady, townland of Ballykelly, My great great grand father David Buchanan  (B 1825 Limavady D1901 Dublin) led a very interesting life, joined the army, fought in the Crimean War, and was married 4 times, widowed 3 times.

Migrated to Dublin on his return from the Crimean War in mid 1850s, and many of our family are still there now.

Baptised either Pres or Cof I  Married 1st St Pauls C of ICork, 2nd St Michan Cof I Dublin and the converted to the Roman Catholic Church and married twice in the St Mary's RC Pro Cathedral Dublin.

  • I notice that PATTON is included in the surname list for your post of 18 January 2013, but I see no mention of the name within your post. Could you please give some details about the PATTONs you are interested in? Thanks.

  • Hi Vince

David (the oft times married) was also my great great grandfather.  My surname is Brady, I am descended through Jos Buchanan & Johanna O'Brien, my grandmother was their daughter Johanna (Toni) Buchanan who married Thomas Brady so you would my grandmother be your great aunt?  I have some of the addresses at which he lived in Dublin ...... I'll attach a document I have based on research my Aunt Cora did.  I have a few photos as well.

  • Hello Aisling, I have been in contact with your aunt Cora and she has been very helpful and has even shared a a piece of work she submitted as part of a course that she was taking.

i am still investigating our past when i get the time.

you may already know that Johanna Buchanan, (nee O'Brien) father was John born in Dublin, his father was Henry O'Brien from Co Meath, not sure where yet.

Johanna mother's family came from Co Carlow, Bagnelstown Parish, her mother Anne Walsh, her father Andrew Walsh.

it would appear that our familes mirgrated to Dublin in the 19th century.

My Dad Francis Buchanan's Father was Davy Buchanan Toni's brother i belive.

My dad left Dublin in the late 1950 met and married my mum Ann Byrne from county wexford and settled in southeast London and had 5 children who have all gone on to have children of our own so you have several relitives over here.

I'll check what I have and send stuuf to you. Do you have David Buchanan military records from the Crimean war if not let me know and i'll send it to you.

  • Hi Vince

My Dad Joe Brady is Cora's brother, Toni's son and so your Dad Francis' cousin ....... so are we 1st cousins once removed or 2nd cousins?  I must tell him at the weekend he's be delighted!  I haven't got David's military records and I would LOVE to see them please ....... Great to find another branch of the family and lovely to meet you (as it were lol) .....

I'm investigating some ancestors on the Brady side ....... the O'Farrells ...... fascinating stuff but if only it was as easy as on "Who Do You Think You Are" lol ....
